Original: When the name of a dog coming into rescue is known, it is rarely changed, but occasionally it happens. Such is the case with this fellow. “Stalker” just didn’t seem to fit this tail wagging sweetie, so his foster dad suggested “Faulkner” and it stuck. Faulkner and his sister, Stella, were rescued from a neglectful situation in northeastern Pennsylvania and nursed back toward good health by a humane society before being given to MAESSR. At 31 pounds, Faulkner is skin and bones and needs to gain at least 10 pounds. All the muscles between his ribs show when he moves and his hips look large since they protrude out. He was shaved to remove mats, so that makes him look even skinner. His coat is stained yellow from his belly down due to spending the past several months in a kennel. Although he has been through so much, it doesn’t seem to have had any long-term effect on his health.
Originally an outdoor dog, Faulkner has adjusted very quickly to living indoors and has been accident-free since his arrival. He loves to snuggle on the couch and sleeps through the night on the bed. He likes to make sure that some part of himself is touching his person. Understandably, this boy loves to eat and does the most amazing happy dance as his food is being prepared. He eats beside his foster buddies and has shown no signs of aggression with the other dogs or humans around his food. He is also very gentle about taking treats.
While Faulkner’s tail wags a mile a minute, he can be a bit fearful if he thinks he has done something wrong. He will do a little submissive pee if one raises a voice, though he really has done nothing wrong at all since in his foster home. To get attention, he will paw an arm or gently nudge with his nose. He will watch his foster dad and when he come towards him, Faulkner rolls to his back, starts wagging his tail, and reaches his paws out to pull him in. It is so cute!
When his family is at work, Faulkner is crated for up to 5 hours. He goes into his crate willingly and waits for his treat every time. Once outside he loves to run around with his foster buddies or just sniff every blade of grass. He has been caught eating frozen “poopsicles” which may stem from his being so undernourished. Despite this, he does not counter-surf, but will stand up to see things or to get petted. He has met all types of young children in the recent snows and has been incredible with them. He is unknown with cats at this time. He rides very well in a car and just hangs out while one runs inside for errands.
His previous owner stated that Faulkner was a hunting dog and knows hand signals and commands. The one problem is that the commands were in German. At this point, he is not very active for his age, but that may change as he starts to regain all his strength and stamina. His foster dad feels he would do well in the field then. For someone looking for a field type dog, Faulkner may be just right. In the field or in his forever home, he will give love back tenfold.
