Update 02/24/08:
Surgery went great this week for Erin. Two suspicious lumps turned out to be harmless cysts. Erin also got a dental so her teeth look great, and a growth over her left eye was removed. Her ears were surgically cleansed of a growth, which should allow the normal ear medication to reach the infection and clear her ears up once and for all. Erin is a cone-head at the moment and giving the shins and calves of her foster family a work out. She is a great patient and doing well.
Once she is cleared by the vet, Erin will be ready to go to her forever home. This cutie is another of those easy fosters and a real joy to have around. She’ll bring the same joy to an adopting family who opens home and hearts to her. How could one resist?
Original:
Erin was found as a stray in rural Delaware as a young dog. She was taken in and lived with an older woman for the next eight years. Unfortunately, the failing health of her rescuer has resulted in Erin needing a new home in her golden years. Erin is very sweet, quiet, and bashful around new people. She warms up quickly though. She loves the resident 9-year-old boy in her foster home. Her owner doesn’t know what happened in Erin’s first few month of life, but Erin was clearly mistreated. To this day, she will flinch and cower to a raised hand or loud voice, so patience is needed with her.
At her first vet visit, Erin was brought up to date on her vaccinations and given a thorough exam. She has ear infections and is Lyme positive, so treatment for both began. Unfortunately, the vet found some suspicious lumps which need to be removed and biopsied; this will be done at the same time as some dental work.
Erin is housebroken. She gets along fine with the other dogs in her foster home and used to live with cats. She doesn’t really know any commands and her foster family is working on that. She will knock over the garbage can if it isn’t secured and wants to get up on the furniture – they’re working on that too. Erin likes to sleep in a crate with an open door at night but will resist being crated and having the door shut. She does OK on a leash but clearly isn’t used to being walked. More experience will help. She did fine in the car on her way to her foster home.
Fingers crossed for good news from the biopsy. More on Erin as she settles into her foster home
