Update 11/12/12:
Emmi has continued to worm her way into her foster family’s hearts. She is such a sweet and loving girl. Her urinary tract infection has been rechecked and is gone, so she’s feeling quite chipper. She has done very well with an anxiety medication, and it is recommended that she be continued on it for a long period. She is much more settled in her world now and will transition through adoption more easily with it.
This sweet girl is definitely a “keeper”, so she needs to find her adoptive home quickly!
Original:
When her Pennsylvania owner of three years was having trouble with Emmi routinely urinating at 5 AM without signaling her need to go out, he decided to relinquish her to MAESSR. Her owner stated that she is housetrained with the exception of this early morning potty call.
This inappropriate urination problem has not occurred in her foster home, however. Emmi is being treated for a UTI, but she has been accident-free since coming into foster care. Her foster family gets up about 5:30 AM and Emmi sleeps as long as they do. Although her foster home does have a doggy door, Emmi does not get up and go out in the middle of the night. She is not crate-trained and has full freedom in the house when her foster family is at work, doing well when they are out.
Sweet and kind, Emmi enjoys being with people and other dogs. She loves to be petted and if you stop petting her, she will first bat your hand with her paw. Then, if you don’t start petting her again, she will very gently take your hand in her mouth and guide it back so you will be petting her. This girl lets you know what she wants! At night Emmi sleeps in bed with her foster parents and even will put her head on the pillow if she gets a chance!
Although she doesn’t live with children, she gets along well with the neighborhood kids, but has not met any toddlers yet. Her foster home has multiple resident dogs in it, and Emmi gets along great with them all. Although she reportedly lived with cats in her previous home, she does bark at any kitties she sees.
Displaying nice house manners, Emmi does not jump up on people, counter-surf or chew inappropriately. She will beg for food occasionally, and she is a barker, but, hey, no Springer is perfect!
Emmi hasn’t had formal obedience training but knows “sit,” stay,” “come,” and “down.” She could use a refresher lesson or two in walking on the leash, though, as she is a puller. Off-leash, she is very trustworthy and comes when called. Not keen on the spa treatment, she is muzzled during grooming as a precaution although she hasn’t snapped at the groomers. She doesn’t like her feet and ears being handled and just pulls away.
Two things cause some anxiety in Emmi: riding in the car and thunderstorms. In the car her nervousness is evident by her panting. When a noisy thunderstorm strikes, Emmi gets very frightened. She is not destructive in her fearfulness; she is just anxious. To help ease this anxiety, Emmi has been started on a supplement designed to treat this and it seems to be helping.
This sweet Springer girl will soon be ready to go to her forever home. Wouldn’t you like an affectionate, adoring Springer snoring next to you on your pillow?
