Original: Emma lived with her former family for her entire life. However, because of a change in their work schedule, they were no longer able to properly care for her and dumped her at a local shelter. Luckily for Emma, a volunteer at the shelter contacted MAESSR and she moved to a foster home.
In Emma’s former home she lived with several children and it’s reported that she did well with them. She did have some issues with visiting children who may not have treated her properly. The report is not very clear in this area. Emma enjoyed watching the neighborhood children sled ride over the weekend and really wanted to join in with their fun.
While a MAESSR volunteer was evaluating her at the shelter, Emma encountered some free roaming cats. She did not show any interest in them but has had no long-term exposure to them either. At 48 pounds, Emma is a very strong girl. She is eating Nutro Max food which is the only one she can tolerate without illness and she is well housebroken.
Emma is currently being treated for kennel cough and an irritation of her eyelid. She made it clear to the vet and also the groomer, by showing her teeth, that these were not activities that she enjoyed. Her former family reported that she is a trash digger, but her foster home has not witnessed this action. Ms. Emma is WONDERFUL in the car. She knows some commands, “sit, stay, come, easy, and shake.” She also walks very well on a leash and does enjoy her daily outings.
This gal made it very clear before entering her foster family’s home that she does not like other dogs. Because one of the resident dogs is timid and has epilepsy, her foster family decided it would be best to keep Emma separated with the use of baby gates. She is getting her turn for walks, potty time, feedings, playtime, etc. This set-up is working, but Emma has demonstrated that she isn’t too happy staring at the resident dogs from behind a baby gate. She is a typical “Velcro” springer who wants to be around people at all times. She has learned to knock out baby gates and has showed her displeasure with the crate by chewing off some metal bars. If left outside, for just a few minutes, Emma will ring the doorbell to let you know she is still outside. Her constant message is “I’m right here, don’t ignore me!!”
Emma likes to take naps on the couch and sleeps on a dog bed beside her foster mom’s bed at night. She reminds her foster family of a cuddly koala bear. For a 7 year old springer she has a normal activity level, yet she is very happy to calm down. She can be quite vocal when she doesn’t have one’s full attention, but her foster mom feels sure she will thrive in a home, AS AN ONLY DOG, where she can get all the attention she so deserves. Walks, cuddles, and no competition with other dogs will make this gal’s world complete. And she may be just the one to make the right adopting family’s world complete!!
