Update 07/07/08:
With his health so very much improved in his first foster home, Elmo has made a move to another family with whom he can continue important progress. He is working on housebreaking with them and is learning what the life of a well-loved dog is like. This opportunity has been great for Elmo and will ready him for a very lucky family soon!
Update 06/05/08:
Elmo is a very sweet boy who is going to be a wonderful addition to someone’s family. When he came to MAESSR, he was a train wreck of health issues. Between his being painfully underweight and having such a wicked case of mange, he was one miserable dog. Major vetting and a very caring foster family have turned Elmo around and he is doing extremely well. He has gained 9 pounds which allowed him to be safely neutered and he is now ready to gooooo!!
He could fit into any home where sporting dogs are loved and have space to sniff, run and play. He will need petting when he nuzzles for attention. If these needs sound familiar, they are. Elmo may be lacking feathers but his heart is surely akin to that of a Springer. He will thrive right alongside ESS siblings and their people! Ask about meeting him today!!
Original:
Poor Elmo. He wound up as a stray in a very rural West Virginia shelter. He was in extremely bad shape. We received pictures of him, which were not very clear pictures, and decided he was a Springer and that he would become a MAESSR boy. It was hard to tell because of the major hair loss and the blurry pictures. It turns out he is a German Shorthaired Pointer….but once you become a MAESSR dog, you get all of the appropriate benefits even if you happen to not be a Springer! The shelter took him to a local vet who boarded him for two weeks so that he could be in isolation until the mange was no longer contagious.
Elmo then got to ride “First Class” on Springer Air as he was flown via private plane to his foster home. He won the hearts of his transporters by being such a wonderful sweet boy. Elmo has had a wonderful attitude through all of his health issues. He went to the vet and was diagnosed with hookworms and whipworms, yeast infection in his right ear, bacterial infection in his left ear, and skin infection, and it was decided that he needed two teeth pulled when he was healthy enough to get neutered. When his foster mom went to pick him up, she got a bag full of prescriptions for him.
Elmo has been in his foster home now for almost two weeks. His skin has improved about a million percent. His ears are amazingly better. He will get treated for intestinal worms two more times and one more treatment to ensure all the mange mites are gone. He has put on some much needed weight and just wants to be close to you. Elmo loves to chase a tennis ball and will play with you for hours.
There will be more info coming on Elmo as he gets to be a healthy boy.
