Update 10/08/2019:“This girl not only rides well in the car but also seems to enjoy it.”

Ellie’s ears and paws are in great shape right now, and she allows her foster mom to clean her ears.  Surgery was done on her right ear to totally remove the ear canal.  Poor Ellie tolerated so many different antibiotics and cultures, but the stubborn ear infections remained.  The vets felt removing the entire ear canal was the only option left and that took care of the problem.  The only issue is that she sometimes scratches at that ear, but a topical medication may help her leave it alone.  The left ear is in good shape.  

This love now accepts grooming with no problem.  She is not thrilled to have her feet done, but she is good about it….just tries to pull away.  The hair on her feet needs to be kept fairly short….especially between the pads.

Ellie recently received an injection that helps dogs not to itch. The vet felt she may need the injection regularly…and especially during peak allergy season.  The injections last 6 to 8 weeks.  Her adoptive parents will need to keep an eye on her to determine when/if she needs the next injection.

This girl not only rides well in the car but also seems to enjoy it. Ellie’s leash manners are a work in progress and her foster mom is using a harness to help her not pull as much.

This beautiful Springer has come so very far in her year with MAESSR.  She is now ready for a furever home that will continue to give her the treatments that are helping her feel so much better and happier.  Ellie loves everyone and is looking forward to having a home of her own.

When her Pennsylvania owners could no longer afford to vet and treat Ellie’s ear and skin problems, they relinquished her to MAESSR.

This sweet girl has had ear issues since puppyhood and her skin issues developed between three to four years of age. Her owners had tried various treatments for the ears but the ear infections always returned. Under the diligent care of her foster parents and their vet, Ellie’s ears are much better and the skin infection is better, especially on her feet.  As these health issues have improved and Ellie is feeling better, she has really become a loving girl. 

Housetrained and crate trained, Ellie is crated when no one is home because she will get into trash cans, tear apart paper and other items, hunt for food, and surf counters.  Her foster parents are working with her on those issues.  Ellie does not like the broom or vacuum, biting at both when they are being used.  Her foster mom just tells her to go away and she does.  

Ellie has never had any formal obedience training so her basic commands are weak. On walks Ellie does pull on the leash as she is eager to sniff and explore. Ellie has done well on long car rides in the past either sitting on the back seat or resting on the floor of car. More recently, Ellie has only been on short drives to the vet. 

Both dog and people friendly, Ellie gets along with the resident and foster dogs at her foster home.  She enjoys being outside playing with the others and sniffing in the fenced yard.  In her original home, Ellie did well with the resident cat but would chase the cat around the house in play. Ellie has no issues with people visiting the house. Also, she is good meeting other people and dogs on walks around the neighborhood. 

Ellie does resource guard food items. She growls when other dogs approach her food bowl while she is eating and she will occasionally growl if her foster family walks close to her when she is eating.  She does not do any more than that, but it is recommended that she not be placed in a home with young children that might crowd her when she is eating.

Ellie does not do well at the groomer; she is terrified at the dog spa.  Due to the allergies that affect her paws, she does not like to have her paws handled. She also does not like the hair dryer or the electric clippers.  As a result, the groomer muzzles her.  

Watch for more as Ellie continues to heal from her ear infections and skin allergies.  Ellie is really a very sweet girl who loves people and has a fun personality.
