Age: 2; born 02/22/2023
Color: Liver/White Border Collie mix
Weight: 50 lbs.
Gender: Altered Female
Location: Girard, PA
Health: UTD, HW-
Temperament: Fine with adults and although probably good personality-wise with children, energy-wise would not be good with little ones, very good with most dogs but wants to be the top female dog, good with dog-savvy cats but will chase kittens to play with them
Update 12/09/2024: “On the other hand, Ella Mae gets along famously with Dottie, the other MAESSR foster in the home.”
According to her foster mom, Ella Mae likes to be the top female dog in the home. She’s been known to scuffle with the resident female canine. It would be best not to pair her with another female with this personality type.
On the other hand, Ella Mae gets along famously with Dottie, the other MAESSR foster in the home. Reportedly, they could be adopted together since they are such good pals, and Dottie might be an excellent way to keep Ella Mae occupied. Some dogs just need a BFF!
Update 09/28/2024: “She has toned down quite a bit and will be a great dog for the right family.”
Ella Mae’s foster mom reports that she is such a good dog. She has toned down quite a bit and will be a great dog for the right family.
Currently she will come in the house and settle with a bone, where before, she’d come in and destroy the bone. She can be left out of her crate when her foster mom can keep an eye on her. This wasn’t possible before, either. Good girl!
While Ella Mae will still dig, she would do great in a home with another dog to play with and an active family. Young children should not be a part of her family since she would knock them over with her energy level.
Ella Mae is up to date with her rabies vaccine but will be taken for her remaining vaccinations soon. She’s ready, willing, and able to become a part of your family!
Update 05/10/2024: “Ella Mae’s foster mom describes her as a great dog with a great personality.”
Ella Mae, still very much a puppy, continues to work on her house manners. She does need to be watched to make sure she doesn’t chew or get into inappropriate items. Her ability to accept crating is appreciated when her owner is out of the house or unable to observe her.
Along with the “sit” command, Ella is working on recall on a flexi lead and is doing a good job. With a leash looped around the waist, Ella does not pull and walks nicely. Her foster mom will be introducing her to a gentle leader.
Ella Mae hasn’t interacted with children except to see the neighbor’s children through the fence. She barks at them as they run and play because she wants to chase them. She wouldn’t want to hurt them but would likely knock them over in her exuberance.
Ella doesn’t yet have all of her MAESSR required vaccinations completed but hopefully that will happen soon.
Ella Mae’s foster mom describes her as a great dog with a great personality. She gets along great with other dogs and loves to play. She needs a forever home that is active and where she will have attention. She requires more than just daily walks and should be involved in a sport or activity.
If you have the time to devote to this fun-loving diamond in the rough, you will be rewarded with a special pup.
Original: “This pup has a very high energy level and is more of a working dog type who needs a job to do rather than being a people-oriented Springer.”
Ella Mae was relinquished to MAESSR when her Pennsylvania owners found her too much to handle.
Housetrained and crate trained, Ella is asked to “sit” before she goes out to join the resident dogs in the yard. She stays in her crate when her foster mom is out of the house and at night.
Still very much a puppy, Ella Mae really needs work on her house manners. She will get into everything in the house and chews inappropriately, so she must be watched all the time. She gets up on the furniture and will get into the trash. She is an accomplished counter-surfer and can be very destructive. Outside, Ella Mae likes to dig in the yard and can jump a fence. She will eat poop, so keeping the yard clean is a must.
Ella knows “sit” and her foster mom wants to work with her more as she’s very smart and feels she can easily learn more commands. She could use some work on her leash manners since she likes to run. She is very friendly when meeting others on a walk. On car rides, Ella is crated for everyone’s safety.
Please note that MAESSR will require the adoptive family to take their new family member through a series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones like Ella– in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. Ella is a smart girl and will be a good pupil.
Ella Mae loves to play and she does not resource any of her toys or food. She will destroy hard rubber toys but likes to chew on antlers, Benebones, and marrow bones. She is fed in her crate.
This pup has a very high energy level and is more of a working dog type who needs a job to do rather than being a people-oriented Springer. She doesn’t like to sit still. Ella has a great personality nevertheless.
Ella is okay standing to be brushed but she hasn’t been up on a grooming table. Her coat is the type that does not need grooming. She is fussy about her feet and skittish, so that is a two-person job. She doesn’t have “spaniel ears” that need frequent cleaning. She behaved nicely at the vet.
The best type of forever family for Ella Mae is still being assessed. Not a typical family pet, this working dog needs to have something to do. She would be great at agility or any kind of dog sport which involves running. Watch for more on Ella Mae.
