Elizabeth came to MAESSR from Maryland due to financial difficulties in her previous home. Her family loved this sweetheart of a baby Springer, but also wanted what was best for her. There were a lot of tears when relinquishing her, but her family knew that MAESSR would make sure that she was placed in a great home.
Elizabeth has cataracts in her eyes and it appeared that she didn’t see as well as a young pup should. She was taken to a veterinary ophthalmologist to have her eyes evaluated. The specialist felt that the cataracts were probably nutritional cataracts. Nutritional cataracts are caused by improper nutrition in the womb or in the first few weeks after birth. If this prognosis is correct, the cataracts most likely will not worsen now that Elizabeth is on a high quality diet. Should they prove to be congenital or genetic cataracts and they get worse, she could go blind or would need to have cataract removal surgery. The ophthalmologist did not recommend surgery at this time, suggesting it would be best to observe their progression. Please keep your fingers crossed that they are indeed nutritional cataracts.
A typical, sweet, fun-loving Springer puppy, Elizabeth loves everyone and thinks that the whole world is here to love on her and play with her. She is so cute that, even when she is naughty, her foster mom has a hard time scolding her. This sweet girl does not have an ounce of meanness in her! Even the old, grouchy Springers in her foster home tolerate her puppy antics, and they sure don’t let anyone else get by with those behaviors!
Elizabeth has not inappropriately chewed on anything in her foster home. She is crate trained and sleeps in her crate at night. She plays very hard all day and just passes out at night. She likes to ride in the car and be wherever her people are. She is so gentle when she puts her paws on her humans that they hardly know she is there.
Leash walking is a work in progress, so Elizabeth needs someone to help her learn proper leash skills. She seems to think that she can just go wherever she wants! Her foster mom thinks that it would be great for Elizabeth to complete at least one series of obedience classes with her adoptive family. These classes are wonderful for encouraging appropriate behavior as well as cementing that bond between human and pup.
Elizabeth has almost completed housetraining. It has been about week since she has had an accident in the house, so she is almost there. YEAH!!!
