Dusty was turned into a shelter in New Jersey when his family said they no longer had time from him. That was evident based on the condition of his coat which was very matted around his ears and underside. However, it has been also very clear that he was well-loved earlier in his life since he adores people.
Since there is already another Dusty among the resident dogs in his foster home, this Dusty has come to be known as “Dusty Doo.” This is a little play on words considering his hairdo when he first came to his foster home. He has the longest coat on top of his head that his foster mom has ever seen! It is pretty straight to boot which makes him look like a rock star! Dusty Doo was bathed and blown dry and he thinks the spa treatment is a delight! When the blower came on, he just turned belly up and enjoyed the pampering. It’s a very rare dog that is pulled from a shelter that just rolls over for his coat to be blown dry because he loves it so much!
Dusty Doo has proven to be housetrained and is basically quiet in his crate. When crated, he will whine at first, but then sleeps there just fine through the night. Dusty gets along with lots of other dogs, but doesn’t really care to live with them. He went with his foster mom on a weekend trip and did fine meeting over ten dogs of all different temperaments. Now, he is currently living with five others in foster care where he is at the bottom of the pack, but he is fine with it. While on his travels, he was allowed to sleep at his foster mom’s bedside rather than in his crate. Once she fell asleep, Dusty Doo did attempt to guard her from other dogs. He did not guard her from people and he did not guard her from other dogs when she was awake; he just felt she needed protection from canines when she was asleep. He only knew his foster mom for 24 hours at this point, so as you can tell, he bonds very quickly with his people.
Dusty Doo knows “sit” and comes when called. He is good with being brushed and having his feet trimmed as well. He was a perfect angel while having the huge mats cut off from his ears. Dusty is not food aggressive in the slightest. In fact, he is not very interested in dog food at all, but is learning that dog food is what meals are made of in his foster home. He does love people food and has proven himself to be a good counter surfer and trash picker. He’s not obnoxious about it though and won’t actually do it in front of you. He response well to correction for these behaviors and with training, his foster mom feels he could be taught better house manners. It’s unknown if he’ll ever be able to walk by a plate of people food that is left unattended and not touch it. That’s a tough one for any Springer, but especially one who has clearly been fed human food rather than dog food during his life.
Dusty Doo needs some leash training, but is very good in the fenced backyard with just a four-foot, chain linked fence. He tends to stick close to his foster mom while in the yard. He hasn’t built the confidence quite yet to go outside on his own through the doggie door with the other dogs and prefers to wait for his mom to go with him. Not a high energy dog, he does not require extensive exercise. Dusty Doo is also very quiet and his foster mom has yet to hear him actually bark. He also does not try to get on the furniture.
Dusty Doo would do well in any type of home setting, but may do best in a home where he can be an only dog and where he can be with his family members as much as possible. His future is looking so very bright! He knows there is a forever home out there that will never run out of time for him and will give him the unconditional love that he deserves! He has so much love to give in return.
