Update 11/24/2013: “He is out on walks in a family neighborhood, daily, and is a regular visitor to the bank, the dry cleaner, the high school…anywhere his family goes, Duncan goes.”
Duncan continues to do well in his foster home and has made a huge impact on all of the family members. He continues to be bright, sunny, affectionate and really involved with the family. He walks well on a leash, comes when called, is calm in the car, sleeps soundly and seeks out interaction with people and other animals. One new observation….he snores!
There were some accidents during the first 10 days, but now that he is in a routine, Duncan has not had any further house-training issues. His family does still have to keep the garbage safely stashed away, but he is otherwise a really easy guest.
Duncan gets a lot of face-time with the outside world. He is out on walks in a family neighborhood, daily, and is a regular visitor to the bank, the dry cleaner, the high school…anywhere his family goes, Duncan goes. He jumps easily in and out of the car and is very alert to all around him. He is a people-magnet because he is cute and outgoing. People approach him all the time to pet him; he is friendly and easy-going with anyone that wants to love on him. He has yet to be in a situation where he has not been easy to deal with and is always able to fit right in.
This week Duncan will be sharing the holiday with extended family, including a 7- and a 9-year old niece and nephew. Wouldn’t you love to see them meet? Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Duncan. Being in the center of a family gathering is right where you belong!!!
If you’re ready to have a “Duncan” at the center of your family life, please ask about meeting this cutie. He’s a great dog!
Original: “Duncan is truly affectionate and much attuned to the people around him.”
When their Pennsylvania family had to move and could not take them along, cocker spaniel Duncan and his ESS housemate Cooper 7 came into MAESSR’s care.
This honorary Springer was in need of heavy grooming and he had ear infections when he first came to his foster home. After a trip to the groomer and the vet, Duncan is clean, cute and on his way to getting rid of his ear infections.
From the start Duncan has been sunny, interactive and affectionate with his foster family, and enjoys walks and running around with the family dog, a four year old Sheltie. He is a perfect gentleman with his new canine housemate and is never aggressive with her or with any of his human family. He is quite assertive about getting love and attention; he is at the door to greet the family members or visitors, tail wagging and nudging to be petted. Throughout the day he pokes his head up from a nap or a bone, or even on a walk, and he comes over for a kiss and a pet on the head. Duncan is truly affectionate and much attuned to the people around him. He loves to be near people and follows his foster mom and dad from room to room as they move through the house. He is probably not the best guard dog – but a wonderful companion!
While happy to cozy-up near a family member for a nap, Duncan is very active and ready for a walk or a game of fetch at any time. He walks well on a leash and patiently sits to have his leash put on. He is already trained to “sit” and he comes to his name, when called assertively. He would be happiest in a family that has a fenced yard for outdoor time, and that has the time to walk him or run him around for exercise.
Duncan eats dry kibble and is very happy with that. When he first came to his family he happily ate kibble mixed with wet food, just like his new Sheltie friend, but his foster mom noticed that he developed an upset stomach. So now, he eats just dry food. He does not beg for people food or treats – though he is happy to have a treat when offered. He is very curious and he will dig into the kitchen trash can if it is not stashed in its cabinet. But otherwise, he has good house-manners. He would LOVE to be on the furniture and occasionally tries; however, he immediately gets down when he is told to and doesn’t try to get back up. He is not at all destructive and doesn’t chew on anything that is not dog-related such as toys or bones.
Although both housetrained and crate trained, Duncan has had occasional accidents on a few carpets – not the hardwood or the tile – leading his foster mom to think that he may have been marking his territory. His foster mom is working on this with him! In his previous home, he had been crated when the family was out, but in foster care Duncan is allowed free run of the house when his foster family is out. When it is time to go somewhere in the car, Duncan is happy riding in the front or the back. He is very calm while in the car, watching contentedly out the window.
Duncan would be happy with any family, with or without kids and with or without other pets. What he likes and needs from a family is lots of affection, some exercise each day, and a loving environment. He gives it back in spades!
