Original: Duke is a sweetheart who was relinquished to MAESSR because of his owner’s ill health and the necessity of her moving to a place where dogs are not allowed. Unfortunately, no one else in the family could take him in, but his MAESSR family could.
Duke has lovely house manners. He does not counter-surf or trash pick although he will lick the dirty utensils in the dishwasher when the door is open. He does not chew or jump up on people. He does not bark except to get a foster family member to toss his toy or to try to persuade someone to give him a bit of what they are eating. Duke is learning that all food in his foster home comes from his dog bowl and he is taking it well. He has learned to sit to get on the leash and to sit and wait until he is given the okay to eat. Duke lets his foster family members pick up his bowl while eating without a fuss. Duke has not been crated for years and is completely housebroken. He has free run of the house all day for up to nine hours with no accidents.
Duke gets along very well with the resident female springer and he lived with a golden lab for many years. His canine foster sister has given Duke a bit of lip and an ear nip when he crossed her boundaries and since then, he has been fine with respecting them. He has met cats and has been interested in them but not aggressive in any way toward them. He doesn’t chase them either but he is just fascinated by them. He loves the kids! His foster family has teens and he has met a neighborhood child who is five years old. Duke does fine with all ages of people. He loves to ride in the car and rests quietly in the back without problems. Going for walks is something that Duke loves also. He only pulls a little on the leash when he is excited to get home for a treat or to catch up with the resident springer who is off leash. Duke has been to the groomer so he looks his best. He did not like having his nails cut, so his foster mom bought a Dremel and filed his nails herself with surprisingly little effort. Now his toes are in as good a shape as the rest of him.
Duke is surprisingly spunky. When someone comes home, he immediately grabs a toy and prances around with it, showing off for the new arrival. If no toy is handy, then he will grab a shoe to carry around for a few seconds. He doesn’t chew it up and gives it right back when told to. He looks so funny carrying a size 12 sneaker in his mouth, almost tripping himself with that enormous shoe! He came to his foster home along with two, much-loved, soft squeaky toys that he plays tug of war and fetch with. He’ll sometimes drop his toy for his human playmate to throw again and he encourages his playmate to chase him to get his toy from him.
Duke is a low energy dog overall and loves to take a good snooze at your feet, sleeping soundly. Do you have room for this loving, obedient boy in your house? Make his golden years ones filled with love and play.
