Original: Drifter is an intact male who came in to rescue from a shelter in PA. We don’t know much about his past, however it is evident that he was not an inside dog. The shelter saw something special in him and immediately turned him over to MAESSR.
He got a bath when he got home, and Drifter’s soft coat came shining through. He was very good during his bath and loved being toweled off and brushed. Although he doesn’t like the dogs to take something away from him, he let his foster mom dig around in his mouth to check his teeth and clean his eyes and check his paws with no problem. He met the resident 2-year-old female ESS and 8-month-old springer mix and demonstrates dominance behavior with both. Drifter would probably do best as an only dog. He also has not been tested with children or cats yet.
Drifter is a genuine love bug. He loves to snuggle and be close to his foster mom and yet he has an independent side too. He also LOVES to play ball. His exuberance in chasing down the ball is thrilling to watch. He’s so excited at the prospect of having the ball thrown he can barely keep his rear end on the ground when told to sit… but he will do it (while dancing a bit!). During his first time at a softball game his foster mom couldn’t figure out why he wouldn’t stand still while she hooked up his leash until she realized the teams were out warming up. There were 20 balls in the air and Drifter had his eye on everyone!
Poor Drifter didn’t know that people don’t like it when you pee in their house and looked up in pure surprise when he heard the first “NO!” He is quickly learning that this is unacceptable behavior. He listens very well and is very responsive to stern commands. He knows come, sit, and no and comes when she whistles for him. He also goes easily into his crate. We expect his housebreaking to continue improving and truly be a non-issue once he is neutered. Drifter will be neutered before placement.
Drifter is a bit on the shorter side but powerful. He’s got large paws and sturdy legs that allow him to be fast on his feet and very athletic. He does have to gain a few pounds and we’re doing our best to help him do so. Drifter craves love and encouragement and would love to have a family to please.
Update: Unfortunately, Drifter had a biting incident and had to be sent to the Bridge.
