Update 02/24/2024: “Her foster mom reports that Dottie will be a fun dog for an active family.”
Since Dottie was fully vetted prior to entering MAESSR, she hasn’t been checked for her weight; but her foster mom says she was a little chubby when she entered foster care and has slimmed down to a nice lean figure. Her next vet visit will determine her actual weight.
Dottie knows “sit,” but this still needs work. She knows “lie down” and is going to be working on “sit-stay” next. She willingly goes into her crate and will come when called.
A very sweet girl, Dottie has a lot of energy and loves her BFF MAESSR foster Ella Mae, along with all dogs. She’s also good with cats. Dottie is a real snuggle bunny and will happily cuddle on the sofa with her person. She is becoming a more confident pup.
Dottie is an excited barker. She likes to chew Benebones and any kind of hard antlers or hooves. She does not resource guard. At mealtimes, Dottie is fed in a slow feeder because she’s such an enthusiastic eater.
Her foster mom reports that Dottie will be a fun dog for an active family. She would be great for someone who wants to do agility activities or fast cat, a racing sport where a dog chases a lure. Are you Dottie’s forever family?
Update 12/10/2024: “Recently Dottie has begun barking to communicate; for example, if neighbors are outside, she will go to the fence and bark at them.”
Dottie continues to work with her foster mom on her leash skills and socialization. Her foster mom is planning on taking Dottie to an agility trial to give her some other opportunities for socialization.
Recently Dottie has begun barking to communicate; for example, if neighbors are outside, she will go to the fence and bark at them.
On days when her foster mom works longer hours, Dottie does have accidents in the crate. Her foster mom is now mindful of how much water she drinks before putting her in the crate.
Dottie and Ella Mae are fast friends. Her foster mom suggests they could be good candidates for being adopted together, with Dottie providing Ella Mae with the engagement she craves. Some dogs just love having a canine BFF!
Original: “This sweet fieldie is getting along well in her foster home where there are other dogs and cats.”
Dottie became a MAESSR girl when the husband in her New York family developed health problems and their puppy was not getting enough attention and exercise since their townhouse had no yard.
This sweet fieldie is getting along well in her foster home where there are other dogs and cats. Timid, she is submissive around them. Dottie is housetrained but her foster mom is unsure if she signals since all of the dogs are let out at once. Although crate trained also, she is given free run of the house when her foster mom is away from home. She does self-crate throughout the day and obviously does not mind going in. At night Dottie will either go in her crate or will pick a dog bed to sleep on.
Dottie has good house manners. She is not given a chance to counter-surf or get into the trash but her foster mom thinks she would if given a chance. Dogs are allowed on the furniture in her foster home and Dottie will happily jump up onto the couch. Inappropriate chewing has been a rarity with Dottie but she is still a puppy. When visitors come to the house, Dottie is shy and it takes a while to warm up to them.
“Sit” and “down” are the only commands that Dottie knows but her response to them only lasts for a few seconds. She needs work on recall, also. Please note that MAESSR will require Dottie’s adoptive family to take her through a series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones – in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment.
Dottie is good walking on a leash since she was only walked on leash for exercise before. When she meets other dog walkers, she is barky and shy, not wanting to greet them. Dottie did not know how to jump in the car so her foster mom had to pick her up and put her in. Once inside, she fussed a little bit and then settled down.
Dottie loves to play with the other dogs in her foster home and she’s full of puppy energy. Antlers and Benebones are her favorite toys but she does not guard them or food from the other dogs. She is fed in her crate because of dog competition. She eats quickly and may benefit from a slow feed bowl.
Dottie has been fine with having her nails trimmed, ears cleaned, and general grooming done by her foster mom. She just hasn’t been to a professional groomer yet. She might be shy then. Her previous owners had all of her veterinary care done before coming to her foster home so foster mom doesn’t know her behavior at the vet.
Dottie would love an active forever home with a fenced yard so she could run safely and play—hopefully with a dog companion. She would love to take walks with her people and play with them too. Dottie would greatly benefit from the required obedience classes which would bolster her confidence and lose some of her shyness. Having a positive, reward-based trainer for her would be terrific. Dottie is a little gem who will come into her own with her new family.
