Springer puppies can be little balls of energy that can be a handful for people unfamiliar with the breed. When taking care of Dottie became too much for her Virginia owner to handle, she was surrendered to MAESSR.
At just 10 months, Dottie is a beautiful bench-bred female who is a smaller girl and is a perfect size at 38 pounds. She has a gorgeous, soft liver and white coat. Besides being beautiful, Dottie is a sweetheart!
Dottie has not met any cats yet, but he is such a sweet, loving girl it does not seem like she would mind having them around. In her foster home, Dottie is living with seven other dogs of various ages and is adjusting very well to pack life. Still ALL puppy, she loves to wrestle and play chase with the other dogs in the backyard. Just as she is good in her play, she is very good with people and dogs around her food bowl.
Her foster family is helping Dottie learn proper Springer manners like not jumping up or chewing on inappropriate items. She is quickly learning that remotes and shoes are off limits despite her love of them! She sometimes knows the commands “sit,” “down,” and “no,” but these need much reinforcement. MAESSR requires all families adopting dogs under one year old to take training classes with their new Springer. This will help reinforce the good manners Dottie is learning in her foster home and help her bond with her new family.
Housetraining has been going slowly with Dottie still having some accidents in the house. This important training will take some time to complete. She is left alone for four hours at a time during the day and she makes it overnight with no problems. Since Dottie likes to chew and carry things around the house, she is crated during the day. She has done extremely well in the crate and enjoys a chew toy as she awaits her people’s return.
Like most Springers, Dottie wants to be close to her humans and wants to sleep in the bed with the other dogs. Your typical Velcro Springer girl, Dottie is usually not more than a few steps from her person, anticipating his or her every move and sometimes getting underfoot. She is very good about riding in the car and usually sits in the back as a good passenger. She is sweet, playful, and very loving. Dottie loves children but in her puppy exuberance, she may knock little ones down trying to say hello. With training and time, this should improve. Since she loves to play, she would do very well if her forever family has another dog who shares her enthusiasm for playtime.
