Original: “Domingo is a very smart boy who has transitioned well from kennel life to living in a home.”
When a kennel in Maryland closed, MAESSR was able to step in to help find forever homes for the dogs, which included the young pup, Domingo.
Domingo is a very smart boy who has transitioned well from kennel life to living in a home. He learned to use the pet door his first day at his foster home. Since he uses the pet door, he has not needed to signal his foster family when he needs to go out. He’s quite the little gentleman, too. He does not beg or bother with the trash and his size prevents him from counter-surfing. What a good boy!
Domingo is getting along great with the resident dogs and has found a playmate with one of the resident cats. He has made several trips to the vet and he had no problem meeting the staff and greeting the other animals in the waiting room.
Unfortunately, due to his lack of socialization and a few minor health issues, Domingo has not had a lot of energy or interest in many of the things young dogs typically love. But with each passing day, a puppy is emerging. He is playing with toys, the other dogs, bones, plastic cups, and a water bottle stuffed in a sock which seems to be his favorite play thing. Domingo is exploring the back yard with much more enthusiasm. He walks on his leash like a pro and can be trusted off leash when walking in the woods and fields.
Please note that MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs 1 year old and younger to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption. Given Domingo’s previous limited socialization, these classes will be so very beneficial to him and his adoptive family. They will add so much to the human-puppy bond.
Coming in to foster care a bit underweight, Domingo is doing very well eating. In fact, he has put on 1.5 pounds since coming to his foster home. He eats in the kitchen with the resident dogs, and has no issues sharing his food or anything else in his possession.
When his foster mom and dad leave the house, Domingo has no problems taking a ride in the car with them or just hanging out at home with the resident pets. A crate is left open if he feels the need to find some alone time, but he normally just leaves his toys in there for safe keeping. Domingo cuddles in bed with his foster parents at night; he loves to hide under the covers or a pillow and, when he has had enough, he goes to the end of the bed to sleep.
At bath time Domingo will get in the tub and stand there very quietly. He likes his ears cleaned…and don’t forget to massage them! He just loves that. So far he has had just some light hair trimming with scissors and was fine with that.
This little guy has been a wonderful foster pet and would be the perfect adopted pet for any family looking for a special forever friend.
