Original: “Besides running in the fenced yard, and playing with the other dogs, Dolly’s favorite thing to do is be a lap warmer.”
This past July, the MAESSR family oversaw the birth of a litter of beautiful pups (Dolly 6, a brother and five sisters) who are now being readied for their forever homes.
Dolly is loving her explorations of the world. Every day holds a new adventure. Her resident canine foster sister is teaching her everything she needs to know about good puppy manners. The lovely Miss Dolly has such a sweet personality, is very interested in being with people, and will play and follow her littermate and foster sister around. She seems very obsessed with brooms and is slightly hesitant/skittish of following someone through a doorway and meeting new people/dogs. Dolly is not afraid of the vacuum or doorbell sounds.
She knows to go to the bathroom outside and is rewarded with cookies. She is not great at expressing a need to go outside and does still have accidents, but she seems to have really been “getting” potty training these past two weeks.
Both Dolly and her brother quickly learned to run to the backdoor when their gated area is opened, and take off down the stairs following the resident female – their “adopted canine foster mom, Fay.” Fay takes her charges very seriously and herds them around the yard, keeping an eye on them both and making sure they know when their play is too rough.
Dolly likes being in the yard to run and play and is very interested in wooded area. She likes to play tug of war and chase with her brother and foster sister. She has been a bit mouthy (getting better) with biting and chewing, and her adoptive family will need to be very mindful of shoes and anything that isn’t a dog toy. Benebones, yak cheese sticks, weezey toothbrushes and bully sticks help immensely with her chewing urges.
Besides running in the fenced yard, and playing with the other dogs, Dolly’s favorite thing to do is be a lap warmer. She loves being with her human foster mom and loves to be loved on! During her vet visit, her feet never hit the ground. All the techs and docs were too busy passing her around and loving on her. She obliged by doling out puppy kisses to all! She has also spent time once a week at foster mom’s work. All of the interns and staff there took turns playing and cuddling with Dolly and her brother.
Dolly mostly sleeps by herself (having graduated from being in a crate with her brother) in a crate with a blanket both inside the crate and over the crate. She also occasionally is able to sleep in bed with the humans of the house and resident Springer. Her foster mom does not know if she would bark if her brother weren’t in the crate right next to her.
Miss D eats twice per day, with plenty of chews, bones and cookies throughout the day. Training should be easy as she is very food motivated. Note that MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. It will require the adoptive family to take Dolly through two series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption.
“Puppy Love” sang her namesake over 60 years ago, and that is exactly what some lucky family will have when they adopt MAESSR’s very special Dolly.
