Original: “Because of her young age, Dolly is very high energy; however, she does settle down in and out of her crate. When she needs to let her inner puppy out, Dolly has joyful bouts of running and jumping that burn off energy and are fun for her and fun for her foster parents to watch! ”
When a Kentucky shelter took in a young stray Springer, the staff reached out to MAESSR to see if we would take this youngster into our program. So, Dolly became a MAESSR girl and started a new life.
Dolly is full of energy and curiosity. She loves to play fetch with her balls and to snatch cat toys from her feline sisters. Because of her young age, Dolly is very high energy; however, she does settle down in and out of her crate. When she needs to let her inner puppy out, Dolly has joyful bouts of running and jumping that burn off energy and are fun for her and fun for her foster parents to watch! Her foster mom has noticed that Dolly may be a hunter. She reports Dolly sniffs constantly outside with her nose down and will occasionally go on point. Could she be your new hunting companion?
With the puppy perspective that EVERYONE is her friend, Dolly does well with strangers although she will bark at other dogs and people from a distance. She has not been yet been around children yet, but since she is very rambunctious and a bit clumsy, her foster mom thinks she could accidentally knock over a young child. So, a forever home with young kids may not be the best idea. Dolly is excited to meet other dogs and jumps energetically. What puppy doesn’t? She chases the resident cats and will lick and nibble at them in attempts to get them to play. The cats appear to enjoy this game of chase and tease Dolly frequently.
As any young pup is, Dolly is extremely curious. She will try to see what is on any counter, dresser, or table and is learning “off” and “down” as a result. She will counter-surf and is extremely interested in people food. She notices every trash bag and can on the street during her walks. Dolly is learning manners, though, and as a puppy who likes to chew, she is learning to trade for an appropriate item. This strategy works most of the time!
Dolly is not housetrained yet. She struggled in the beginning with the concept of only eliminating outside but is starting to catch on. When it is bedtime, Dolly sleeps in a crate. During the night, she will wake up a few times, needing to go outside. Dolly is learning to walk on a leash and does not pull. She was skittish at the beginning, but is starting to have more confidence while walking. However, she will cross your path and walk under your feet. She rides very well in a car and is not stressed about traveling. She is eager to please and has mastered “sit” for a treat in two days! Dolly is smart and wants to make everyone happy…and to play a lot!
Please note that MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs under 1 year old to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption. Dolly will be a star pupil.
With grooming being a new experience for her, Dolly was afraid during her first bath but allowed her foster mom to touch her all over without any grumbling or discontent. She has shown no aggression the entire time she has been in the foster home and has no issues with food or toys. She is an extremely good natured puppy! Dolly is a sweet dog that loves to be around her foster mommy. What a good girl!
Upon a visit to the vet, Dolly was found to have kennel cough and worms, for which she is receiving treatment. Weighing in at 30 pounds, Dolly looks great and the vet thinks she will be a lean and tall adult.
Dolly is your typical Springer puppy looking forward to the spring and “springing” into your family. She will make a wonderful addition to any family that is looking for the high energy antics of a Springer puppy and that is willing to put the time and effort into training her to be a well-behaved adult.
