Doc’s story is one that is all too familiar. When his owner passed away and the family left behind did not want him, Doc found himself in a rural Pennsylvania shelter. The shelter staff knew that MAESSR would be able to find a great home for this boy and quickly notified a rescue volunteer so that Doc could be taken into a foster home.
Since arriving at his foster home, Doc has shown that he is quite the character and he “copy cats” another older resident male Springer. Whatever this resident Springer does, Doc does – from barking to shredding up toilet paper!
Doc is currently residing with six other dogs, both male and female, and three resident cats. He gets along wonderfully with all of the resident and foster dogs as well as the felines. Doc and two of the other fosters will engage in some pretty spirited play sessions and at times have to be told, “Enough! Go take a nap! so that they will settle down.
With the typical behavior of a three year old Springer, Doc needs plenty of exercise. He is completely housetrained, but, as a recently neutered male, he may still mark if not supervised a bit. This boy is also a bit of a beggar when it comes to food and hops like a kangaroo on his back legs to see if there just might be something good on the counter. When his paws do reach the countertop, he quickly backs off when told to do so. Doc has not been given the opportunity to trash dive so his behavior there is unknown. He also does not get onto the furniture, with the exception of following his resident Springer role model up onto the recliner.
Doc is crate-trained but prefers not to be crated. He will bark, cry, and carry on for a few minutes but then settles down. The resident female made the decision that Doc should not be crated and gave him free rein in the house when she figured out how to open up his crate! Since he is not destructive, Doc is trustworthy when he is loose and gets to sleep wherever he chooses at night.
Doc rides very well in the car but prefers to be a front seat passenger unless he has company in the backseat. He has been on several rides and has not gotten car sick. It is best that he be harnessed for safety when on adventures in the car. Doc does fairly well on a leash and with consistent daily walks, and perhaps even a harness, this will only improve. Doc took a trip to the vet which he did not seem to mind at all. His next adventure will be a trip to the groomer!
This young boy loves everyone he meets and thinks that having kids throw a ball for him is the best thing ever! Doc knows the basic commands of “sit,” “down,” “paw,” and “stay.” Because he is a trained hunter, Doc has not been tested off leash; this boy is very intense and knows exactly what to do when he sees a bird!
Doc has no aggressions at all. He is a super Velcro boy who loves to be with people and other dogs. If you have another canine looking for a playmate and you are looking for a super companion, Doc may just be the boy for you!
