Update 08/31/11:
In order to put Dice’s mouth in tip top shape, the extraction of 13 teeth was necessary. But don’t get the idea that he’s letting that slow him down in the eating department. Dice can still eat dry food and dog bones! What a boy!
This beautifully marked Springer now has a healed mouth and he is just the happiest guy. He loves to run at his foster family’s farm, and the joy it gives him to freely run with the other dogs in the fields is obvious. Following a good run, he loves to lie down in the stream and cool off.
Dice stays around the house off lead. He is nosey and will wander a bit, but he comes on demand when called. Good boy!
Dice considers barking to be an important form of communication. When he is in the house alone and his people are outside, he will bark. When left on the deck outside, he will bark. If he begins to bark and his foster mom is near, she will tell him no and he will stop. But if he gets into a really good barking session, it requires a touch to get him to cease and desist. Barking is Dice’s only bad habit; otherwise he is a perfect boy who’s sweet as can be.
Why don’t you roll the dice and be a lucky winner with this special boy?
Original:
At 55 pounds Dice is a sweet boy and a big one. His initial vetting has started and will be complete soon. What is known now is that he has a sensitive mouth and will likely need some dental work. The fact that he will not eat chewies in his foster home seems one measure of how much his teeth are bothering him. His foster family has also noticed that he doesn’t play with toys or a ball and does not like to put things in his mouth – maybe another sign of tender teeth! Fingers crossed that the doggie dentist can bring relief!
Dice has a wonderful disposition. He is sweet and loving, gentle of mouth, and very good in the house. He knows come, sit, and give me paw. He stays close to the house when let out to do his duty and comes right back in. He is walking well on a leash with his foster mom’s 5 year old granddaughter – almost a Norman Rockwell vision! He does bark when his family leaves home and when they come back. When his family can take him along with them, he rides well in the car. When they aren’t home and Dice is, it seems he likes to sleep in the bedroom or look out the bedroom window. If he would clean his nose prints off the window, his foster mom might never know!!
When his family is home, Dice is a typical Velcro dog and stays with them as they move around the house. He is house trained, does not counter surf and does not get on furniture (except that bed :))), so he has full run of his foster home. He may have been crate-trained when young but doesn’t need one now. He gets along well with other dogs, both in the house and in the neighborhood when out on walks. If he sees a new dog while on a leash, he may give a low growl but he will quiet when his foster mom reminds him of his manners.
Dice was relinquished to MAESSR after being given by his original owner to parents in Pennsylvania who could not take care of him any longer. He has a few health concerns to work through but for now is settling well. He has adjusted easily to new surroundings and a new routine.
More to come on this senior sweetheart.
