Original: “Dexter is whip-smart. He can learn almost any trick with a couple of treats.”
Dexter had spent his entire life with his original owner in Maryland. Recently, Dexter had a bad ulcer in his eye and, when a member of the family decided to clean the eye, he snapped, catching her ear lobe. Dexter was then relinquished to his vet to whom he’d been going since the family got him as a pup for grooming, baths and medical treatment–approximately 50 visits. The vet staff contacted MAESSR to see if we could help.
Dexter is whip-smart. He can learn almost any trick with a couple of treats. Besides sitting, standing, lying down, and rolling over, Dexter has learned to do hand-shakes, high-fives, and twisting around. He really enjoys a mental challenge.
This boy has boundless energy and really needs physical and mental exercise. He loves to play with anyone, including with other dogs He enjoys playing with a tennis ball, but it’s not known if he likes the water.
Mr. D. does not like cleaning of his eyes or ears—what Springer does? His foster mom started the routine that if she does anything to his eyes or ears, he gets special treats. This has made him much more willing to have his eyes and ears cleaned. His foster mom feels if this reshaping of his attitude toward having his eyes and ears cleaned is continued, the resistance he has shown in the past will not be problem in the future.
Like many Springers, Dexter is prone to ear infections because his ears are so floppy. The infections always go away upon treatment by the vet, but if he can be trained to permit regular cleaning of his ears, the infections might be avoided in the first place.
Dexter rides well in the car. He does pull on the leash when he is excited and has the cutest WOO WOO when he wants his person to do something. And also, like many of his breed, he likes to sleep in the bed with his foster parents!
This fellow is a well-trained, sweet boy who is incredibly loyal. What fun he might have with agility or nose work. Keep an eye on his progress and think if you would like a really smart Springer in your home!!
