Original: “A very lovable boy as well as being very smart, Dexter is completely housetrained and has been given full run of the house at all times.”
Dexter came to MAESSR as a stray after being found in a drainage ditch in Pennsylvania, scared to death. After slowly coaxing him out and gaining his confidence, his Good Samaritan reached out to MAESSR to see if we could bring him into our program. Now, he is ready to start his new life.
A very lovable boy as well as being very smart, Dexter is completely housetrained. Since he is trustworthy and is not a chewer, he has been given full run of the house at all times. Another reason for this privilege is because he is not crate trained and he is able to climb over the kitchen gates! He must be a mix of mountain goat and ESS! Dexter does counter-surf but so far has not taken anything that was not given to him.
Dexter loves to play with his toys and balls and the resident Springer and Dachshund. He is full of energy but knows that when his foster mom is working on the computer that it is time to rest. He does not bother the resident cats although they are very good at hiding from him. Dexter loves to cuddle with his foster mom and the resident dogs and sleeps with them all at night. He has never met anyone he does not like immediately including children as young as five! Not at all food possessive, Dexter is even willing to share his food bowl with his Dachshund friend!
Dexter knows how to “sit,” “give paw,” and “shake.” He usually comes when called; however, this command will require a little more polishing. His foster mom is working with Dexter on his leash manners when the snowy weather has allowed. She is confident that with a little more work he will become the young gentleman she knows he can be! Since Dexter is a climber, his foster mom’s four foot chain link fence has not prevented him from climbing over the top without difficulty to join her in the driveway. Perhaps a taller fence or a different type of fence would contain him. Dexter loves car rides and does well on them. He would prefer to sit in your lap, though, and drive himself, so training in how to be a safe passenger will need to be reinforced.
During his vet appointment, Dexter was found to have a bilateral ear infection, and he is receiving medication twice a day to clear that up. A blood test showed he was Lyme positive; however, the vet did not find any indication of Lyme disease. He weighed in at a respectable 46 lbs.
Dexter is looking for forever parents who will continue to work on his house and leash manners. He wants parents who will provide him with a good amount of activity and reassure him that he is going to have a happy life. Are you the family to provide this beautiful Springer with the forever home he deserves? Inquire about Dexter today!
