Update 07/19/12:
Devon continues to make progress in his foster home. He is such a sweetie and only annoys the other dogs occasionally. Actually, he plays with them on a regular basis.
Devon’s foster mom is so impressed with him. She can do anything to him and he just stands there with no reaction; he’s just too sweet!
This handsome young boy is just waiting for his special family to come sweep him away!
Update 06/13/12:
Devon recently moved to a new foster home just to see how he would do if his world was changed a bit. He made the switch with no issues and quickly became a favorite of his new foster mom. Devon loves to snuggle and cuddle or run and play ball. Whatever you want to do, he is ready.
This boy is handsome, super sweet and a lot of fun…………all the things you could want in an ESS youngster. He’s ready for a family who will enjoy being active with him, who will guide him into full adulthood, and who will love on him as every springer should be loved!!
Update 05/15/12:
As is not unusual, at a year-old, Devon is still a puppy! He continues to do well with the younger puppy in his foster home but hasn’t won over the adult dogs. He walks well on a leash and loves to ride in the car but continues to jump and bark at new people and new situations.
Devon will play fetch but doesn’t always grasp the wisdom of giving the ball back to his playmate. At times, he will drop it a short distance away, clearly choosing not to put the ball into one’s hand. It does seem to matter who he is playing with……his foster mom insists that he “come”, then touches him, and takes the ball from his mouth…………this way the game continues!
Devon seems to be one who responds to firm, fair and consistent leadership. In return, he is a Velcro boy and will not leave your side. He is sweet and loving with his foster mom. His adopting family will need to continue the socialization and training that has started in his foster home. Though not a requirement, a basic obedience class might be time well spent for all. Likely Devon’s never had such an opportunity. In a sense, he’s a work in progress………………for a family that is ready to work with him, Devon will make a great pet!
Original:
A young Springer can be a bundle of energy. Sometimes this energy can be too much for even the best-intentioned owner to handle. This was the situation that Devon’s Delaware owners experienced with him so Devon became a MAESSR dog.
Never having been socialized, Devon is learning how to get along with other dogs in his foster home. He loves to play with the resident six month old female lab, but the older resident dogs do not appreciate Devon’s attempts to dominate them. As a result, there are daily skirmishes between Devon and them. It may be best for Devon to be an only dog in his forever family.
Devon is housebroken, but he is not crate-trained. He signals when he needs to go out. When his foster parents are out of the house, Devon has the run of the house and is very good. His previous owners allowed him on the bed and it took him a while to learn he cannot sleep there in his foster home.
When he is out in the yard, Devon stays around the house and comes when called. He loves to play fetch with his people and he has a little toy ball –his binky– that he carries around with him. He does not resource guard his food or other toys. This moderate energy boy lies around the house during the day, but when his foster family goes to their farm, Devon enjoys running.
Not used to being around strangers, Devon barks when he sees new people and will not go up to greet them. Although he is quite timid with strangers, he allows his foster family members to touch him all over. He was fine with his foster parents’ five-year-old granddaughter, but his foster mom recommends a house with older children. A Velcro boy, Devon loves being with his people and will grumble at other dogs that get too close to them. When he wants attention, he jumps up and barks.
Devon is a sweet boy but is determined to get his way. Because of this tendency, he will need an owner or family who is strong in making Devon obey.
