Original: “He loves to stop and smell everything he possibly can, then marks his spot!”
Deuce (aka Duke) found his way to MAESSR when his Pennsylvania owner was moving out of the country. Duke adjusted quite well into his foster home when he first arrived and continues to do well, having learned the daily routine.
Duke is housetrained with no accidents in the house. He has learned the doggie door and will let himself outside if he needs to “go,” otherwise he is taken out regularly and will go to the door to signal if the door is closed. Duke doesn’t need a crate as he is completely trustworthy in the house. He just naps while his foster mom is not at home. At night Duke has a doggie bed that he sleeps on, and he typically sleeps through the night. His house manners are great with absolutely no issues whatsoever.
This sweet guy has no resource guarding of anything. He eats his breakfast and dinner in the kitchen. He takes treats gently though he prefers for them to be put down in front of him, except if it’s cooked chicken! Duke is not much of a barker. If he sees someone crossing the street at times he will bark, but not for very long. He’s probably saying, “Hey come visit!”
While Duke’s hearing is diminished, he does hear loud sounds like the very loud thunder boom that woke him up one night. He does understand hand signals such as “sit,” “down,” sometimes “paw,” and “come.”
Duke rides very well in the car, either looking out the window or napping. He loves to go for walks and when he sees the leash, he gets very excited! He has a pretty good stride while walking, with multiple stops at poles, fire hydrants, bushes, and grass. He loves to stop and smell everything he possibly can, then marks his spot! On Duke’s walks, at times he wants to go a different route, like walk on the opposite side of the street. When he has this in mind, he will completely stop and will not move until his foster mom goes the way he wants! So, he may be “part” mule! Sometimes his foster mom wins this battle of wits, but mostly Duke wins…he certainly is determined!
On his walks Duke has met many people, children included. And he MUST greet them! His flowing tail just wags and wags! Duke has also met many dogs on his walks. He has done well with all, including a Bull Mastiff senior that he wanted to play with! On his walks if the dogs he sees through fenced yards bark at him, then he will return the greeting.
On one walk, Duke saw something crawling across the road. He stealthily crept up, kind of like a cat would, and he discovered a turtle! Very curious about this creature, Duke watched it and went up to it from behind; but when the turtle stopped, Duke backed up – smart boy! Duke has met, somewhat, the visiting squirrel. One morning both Duke and the squirrel, which was on the outside table, just stood and looked at each other. Duke was curious and approached slowly, but the squirrel was not in the mood to meet and scurried off. Duke also likes to lie on the deck and watch the birds come to the feeders. He has met the resident cat and was curious, but he did not go too near as the cat was loudly meowing at him. Good boy!
Duke doesn’t play with any toys. He is completely satisfied with his walks, belly rubs, and napping. He did well at the vet with absolutely no issues. Duke was groomed prior to coming to MAESSR. For typical home maintenance he has done well. His foster mom trimmed the hair on his paws and cleaned his ears with no problems. And Duke loves to be brushed – with ears so long and a tail so full, he must be brushed often!
Duke simply enjoys each day with his walks and naps. He likes to be near his foster mom. A very calm, loving, and simple life for Duke!!
