Original: Derby is now 10-weeks-old, as of this Friday, and weighs in at 9.6 pounds. He was placed with MAESSR by his family due to their changing circumstances. He had already gotten his first set of shots and had been dewormed, but he made his first vet trip with his foster mom last week. He had a very good checkup, getting his nails trimmed and a fecal check. He tested positive for coccicidia, an intestinal ailment common in puppies, and the vet gave him a prescription for treatment. He goes back on July 22 for his second set of shots.
Derby is doing very well in his foster home, including his housebreaking. He is spending all night in his crate without waking up or using the bathroom. He is learning the commands to “get busy” when he goes outside and then comes back inside. He’s had a couple of accidents in the house but what puppy hasn’t! He is a VERY HIGH energy puppy as most of them are. He loves to chew on his foster sister. They get along very well and are constantly playing and chasing each other. Derby’s behavior with cats is unknown at this time but has seen one and ignored it. He loves everyone and is currently the STAR of Doggie Day Care. He has all the girls there wrapped around his little paw.
As is typical with most puppies, Derby is into anything and everything that he can find. However, he is learning the words, “WRONG,” “OFF,” and “sit.” He is also working on “no bite” as he likes to chew on his foster mom’s hands. He loves to bite on clothes also which is why she is working on “No Bite,” especially when walking with him. He loves to play with toys and when he tries to take off with one of his foster mommy’s shoes, he is easily correctable and accepts an appropriate toy. He hates walking on a leash and prefers to chew on it while he has it on. It’s almost like he is walking himself. Whenever it is time to call it a day, he is now much more receptive to his crate and is learning to “go to bed.”
Derby has learned his name very quickly and will come when he hears it on most occasions. He is an extremely bright boy and is smart enough to already be testing his limits. He will need a family who can continue his education through to adulthood and be prepared to enjoy every antic and surprise that a springer puppy came bring into one’s life!!
