When Dean’s former family in Pennsylvania couldn’t afford vet care and flea meds, his skin condition and ears were a bit of a mess. They realized that turning him over to rescue would be the best solution to help their Springer. They had raised a really sweet dog, but he needed more attention.
Dean has shown that he is 100% housebroken in his foster home, just holding it until he gets to go out. He will hang out in an open crate, and usually sleeps in one at night, but reportedly clawed his way out of closed crates in the past. Since he doesn’t love closed crates, he just gets contained in 3 or 4 rooms when his humans are away, mainly to keep him off the furniture. At night, he sleeps in an open crate at the base of the stairs away from the humans second floor bedroom. A puppy gate keeps him from climbing the stairs.
When his foster mom is working from home, Dean can usually be found flopped nearby on the floor or in an open crate. He will do minor counter-surfing but knows “off.” Same is true with furniture; he’d love to sit on the sofa with his head in someone’s lap so is usually gated away from humans watching TV. He doesn’t trash surf nor chew anything he shouldn’t.
This handsome tri-color knows “sit” and is learning “down” and “off.” Dean’s leash manners are a work in progress, but his foster sister is much worse at pulling than Dean. With some practice he would make a wonderful running companion. Car rides are his joy. He loves jumping in to go for adventures. He loves his squeaky toys and doesn’t destroy them. Dean will chase them when thrown and bring them back to play keep away from his humans.
Reportedly Dean lived with a dog savvy cat in his original home, but he was obsessed with trying to chase and got to a different cat in a temp foster home over Thanksgiving; so, no cats. He also was raised without a fenced yard and reportedly didn’t go far, but that was a rural situation. A fenced yard would be necessary unless he got lots of exercise otherwise. He doesn’t jump a 4′ fence in his foster home.
Dean was initially a bit pushy with the resident dogs in his foster home and does like to sniff the female hound resulting in a few minor tiffs initially. He and the big resident male are fine together. Slow introductions would be necessary. He warms to new humans after about 30 seconds, giving an initial “woof” just in case, but then wags away. He liked his medicated baths, was initially friendly at the vet until the needle stuff started. He is fine with having his ears cleaned and is on meds to get them in better condition.
This funny guy likes to have a human stand by while he eats his meals. He doesn’t have food aggression and can be fed in the same room as the resident gal who also eats slowly. Since the resident male inhales his meals, he’s fed separately. Dean loves a nice soup bone for chewing.
Ideally, Dean would be like to have an active home where the folks were around enough to keep him occupied and work on his leash manners. Car rides or getting to hang out at work with someone would be a dream situation for him. He’s handsome, loves to be touchy-feeling close to his person or people and needs someone to help him bloom into being a great dog.
