We’re not sure that Darrin is even a year old. He is a very sweet stray who was brought into a shelter with a badly broken leg. They had it pinned, and we took him for fostering. Well, the pins have come out and now Darrin will be having another surgery to put plates in his leg. We anticipate that after this surgery he should be able to recuperate well.
Despite the fact that he can’t get around and that he has pins in his leg, Darrin is a sweet, friendly boy. He loves everyone. He would play with the other dogs if allowed. His adoptive home will have to commit to an obedience class for this boy. He’ll be a real keeper when he is healed.
Update: February 17, 2001
Well, we tried. Unfortunately, Darrin’s leg was too badly broken. We took him in for a second round of surgery to put the plates in. However, the veterinary surgeron indicated that the leg was too badly crushed and there was to much muscle involvement to be able to save his leg. The plates would not have helped him. We made the tough decision and had his leg amputated. In many ways, Darrin seems relieved. He can run and play and is having a great time with his foster home’s owners.
Darrin gets around quite well on three legs. At least for now – he can not maintain the energy level of a four-legged dog his age. His back leg is unused to the strain, and he gets too tired. But don’t be fooled – this is an active energetic puppy who loves everyone and always wants to play.
Look beyond the amputation and you’ll see Darrin – a great dog looking for a home to call his own.
We are going to give Darrin two weeks or so to heal before we offer him to a home.
