Daphne found herself in a Pennsylvania shelter after being picked up as a stray. It is hard to believe that this sweetheart remained unclaimed with nobody looking for her. Since the shelter staff had worked with MAESSR previously, they were delighted when we asked if they would like our help with Daphne knowing that MAESSR would find her the perfect home.
Walking into her foster home where there are nine other dogs and two cats, Daphne acted as if she had been life-long friends with everyone! She quickly shared toys, beds, water bowls and even food bowls with the other dogs and was appreciative that the resident dogs are very tolerant and accepting of new fosters!
Completely housetrained and crate trained, Daphne is permitted to have free run of the house when her foster mom is not home because she is extremely trustworthy. She does not counter-surf or chew inappropriately, and since there are no trash cans accessible to tempt the canines, that has not been an issue. If her foster mom has something that Daphne thinks would be tasty, she will give her the Springer “sad eye” look, but she quickly gives up though when told “no” as people food is not permitted in her foster home. When out for a walk, Daphne has nice leash manners and does not pull or tug at all.
Daphne has recently been to both the groomer and the vet and not only enjoyed her rides there but was also a very good girl at both venues. She thoroughly enjoyed being pampered at the groomer and was cooperative when getting her ears cleaned, her feet shaped up, and her nails clipped. Good girl!
While at the shelter, the staff felt that Daphne had both some sight and hearing impairment, but this has not been observed by her foster mom. Her eyes are a little cloudy, but the vet felt that this was strictly an age-related issue and she passed all of the eye tests. Daphne’s hearing is also much better than thought; just say the word “cookie” and she will come running! This middle-aged girl is also receiving vitamins and joint supplements to help prevent any age related stiffness that she originally displayed when entering foster care.
Daphne would do best in a forever home with another dog as a companion and possibly someone who is either retired or works from home. Although Daphne does not display any destructive or negative behavior, she does seem to have mild separation anxiety which has been helped with a mild over-the-counter aid. If her human is at home and Daphne cannot see her, she cries, but there have been no complaints of this fussing by the neighbors when Daphne’s foster mom is not home.
Bringing a seasoned Springer girl into your home will be a blessing for you and your other dogs and cats.
