Update 09/19/08:
Danny came through his eye surgery just fine. One thing, however, the veterinarian could not correct for him is his dry eye condition. Danny will require an eye ointment twice a day for life to combat this and keep his eyes healthy and comfortable. The ointment is of moderate cost and available through one’s vet. Danny is very good about letting you put the ointment in – good boy!!!
Anytime the door is open, Danny will jump into the car. He LOVES to go for rides. He takes a lot of coaxing to come out at times. He is quite blessed with a foster mom who enjoys seeing him have his fun. Sometimes, she will just drive him around for a few minutes and finds that is enough to satisfy his wanderlust.
Another way of looking at Danny’s love to be on the go is that it may be his way of saying h’s ready to go to a new family. He’s a very laid back Springer, except at meal time, when he will jump and spin around at the prospect of getting fed. Danny’s a hoot! If you are hoping for a tremendously personable companion, Danny is your man!!!
Update 08/17/08:
Mr. Danny Man went to the groomer this week and he looks marvelous! It was clearly the first experience he has had with a groomer. Although he was a challenge and very curious about everything, he was as sweet as could be. The groomer said his temperament is such that you can do anything to him, and he will accept it. No aggression what so ever, just a genuine sweetie pie!
Since his activity restrictions have been lifted, Danny has been enjoying many sessions of playing with the resident female Springer. They have become good buddies. His last hurdle is this coming week when he goes for his cherry eye surgery. After that, with pretty eyes to match his beautiful spirit, Danny should be ready to meet his adopting family.
Update 07/28/08:
Danny’s foster family has had the pleasure of Danny’s company for a few more weeks. He’s doing satisfactorily with his heart worm treatment. There were a couple of scary days, but those are behind now and he’s doing well. Danny has lost a few pounds, but he needs to drop a few more once he is past his heart worm confinement. His cherry eye will be operated on once he gets the all clear from the vet about three weeks after the end of the treatment.
Danny is now getting along well with the three resident Springers, but his foster parents are monitoring their interaction closely because they do not want to put Danny in any situations where he may be stressed. Danny gets a lot of free time with the calmest resident male. They nose each other and then just go about their own business. The resident female is a bit too playful for Danny right now and the other resident male Springer is a bit of a wild card. So, Danny’s interactions with these two are rather limited.
Danny is an absolute joy and has such a sweet personality! When the vet tech brought him to his foster mom after his heart worm treatment, she stated he was the sweetest foster dog yet! He will make a great addition to any family and when he goes to his forever home, he will leave a big hole in his foster family’s hearts.
Original:
Danny was surrendered to a Georgia shelter by his owners who could not afford his vet care. The shelter was overcrowded and due to Danny’s health needs, he was scheduled to be euthanized. Shelter staff saw what a good boy he was and called MAESSR for help.
Danny is a sweet little guy with impeccable house manners. He is too short to counter-surf, but has no trouble jumping on furniture. He’s very calm in the house and, outside, he walks very nicely on the leash. He will sit on command and gives you his paw. He’s so fat, though, when he lifts his paw, he starts to roll over! Danny loves car rides and tries to go for the front seat; however, he goes into a crate willingly. Overall, he is a very happy guy!
His original foster mom has not allowed Danny to interact directly with the three resident Springers because of his health issues and the aggressiveness of the resident male Springer. Danny is crate-trained and he has been crated along with the other dogs when his foster family is away from home. Danny seems to want to interact with the resident Springers. He will go up to their crates and wiggle his butt and stick his nose through the crate wire. Danny arrived housebroken so he must have been living indoors in his previous life.
This North Carolina boy is going to be heading to a foster home in Maryland where he will begin his heartworm treatment. Watch for his progress in the weeks ahead.
