Update 01/02/2025: “Dallas is such a great dog. He loves everybody and everything!”
Recently, Dallas had a flare up on his back, with a new lesion. He returned to the vet and saw a different doctor, one of the most senior staff members. He also was puzzled as to why Dallas has skin issues but tried something new. Dallas received a Cytopoint injection and is on a new antibiotic. He also was prescribed a different medicated shampoo. So far, Dallas is doing great. The old lesions seem to be healing and there are no new ones. That’s great news for Dallas!
His foster dad must keep up with the eye treatments or they start getting goopy and red. One ointment is applied once daily, the other twice daily. Dallas tolerates the ointments amazingly well and the treatments appear to be working. He will need to be on them for the rest of his life.
Dallas is such a great dog. He loves everybody and everything! Senior Springers are great…consider adding Dallas to your family.
Original: “He’s inquisitive, gentle, and very mellow.”
Dallas came to MAESSR through no fault of his own. His Maryland owner was going into an in-patient treatment facility and could no longer care for his beloved Springer. The bond between them was obvious.
Dallas has excellent house manners. He is housetrained and can be trusted alone when his foster parents are gone and doesn’t seem to mind being by himself. He can be very patient and doesn’t signal to go out, other than pacing. He will take care of business and come right back in. Dallas was never crate trained and is very wary of the crate. Luckily, he does not need it. At night he sleeps either on his bed or on the floor; he moves around at night and usually ends up on his bed). He would love to sleep on the big bed with his foster parents and does when they aren’t home.
Dallas was used to getting table scraps in his former home, so he will watch his foster parents eat for a while but then lies down under the table when he realizes no scraps will be coming. He doesn’t get into the trash or counter-surf, though he will sniff. He does enjoy sneaking some cat food when given the opportunity. Dallas does not chew or jump up on the furniture, except for his peoples’ bed. He is a true Velcro-Springer and follows his folks wherever they go. Even outside he wants to stay close and does not try to run off.
Dallas knows “sit” and “down” but that’s about it. He’s hard of hearing, so his foster parents are working on hand signals. He seems to understand a “come” wave. He is fine on a leash and does not pull. It is hard for him to get into the car, but once inside he settles on the back seat with no problem.
Dallas is not interested in toys, though he came with a basket full of them. He is great with everyone he’s met, including a 7-month-old baby. He’s inquisitive, gentle, and very mellow. It’s the same with the resident cats. He was curious to meet them but leaves them alone. He has not met any other dogs so far but didn’t react to seeing a dog at the vet. Dallas eats in a room adjoined to the kitchen and shows no evidence of resource guarding.
When Dallas arrived at his foster home, his skin was covered with lesions/scabs. Eyes and ears were also infected. He has been placed on antibiotics and medicated ointments to combat these infections. An allergy link was suspected so Dallas was put on a grain free kibble diet to control allergies. Dallas is being a trooper in allowing his foster dad and the vet clean his ears and administer all of the antibiotics. He is making good progress in moving to good health.
Laid back, mellow, and very sweet, Dallas would make a lovely addition to any lucky family.
