Update 10/05/11:
Dallas remains a loveable, huggable boy, but he has now shown his foster parents that he can be just as playful with the other resident dogs. When he was taken to the local dog park, he joined in a game of Frisbee with the other dogs, running and trying to catch it. He does return it, but he enjoys teasing his foster mom or dad by trying to hold on to it with his mouth or his paw. A couple of times, Dallas tossed the Frisbee in the air – not too far up, but enough to show that he was not through playing. Dallas appears to maintain a high energy level when he is playing.
It has become apparent to his foster parents that Dallas loves water. The dog park has a large water bucket for the dogs to drink from, and Dallas was trying to figure out how he could get into it by taking his front paw and putting it in the bucket! Just think how much fun a bigger body of water would be for him!
Giving Dallas a bath is no problem. On a recent trip to the groomer, it was reported that Dallas just stood in the tub, resting his head on the rim while slowly drifting off to sleep. Of course, like many Springers, he’s not a fan of having his feet trimmed.
Recently Dallas was one of three ambassadors at the Lenoir, NC Car Wash, Bake and Yard Sale. This event was put together by a group of high school students and their teacher to raise money for MAESSR’s Springer spaniels. At first Dallas was a bit leery and shy of the teens and other visitors, but with watchful eyes he soon warmed up to them.
Dallas would love to have an energetic family that would play Frisbee or ball with him and maybe take him swimming. And don’t forget lots of cuddles!
Original:
When his owner dropped Dallas off at a shelter in Tennessee, a shelter staff worker contacted the MAESSR family for help in getting him a new home. Dallas – fear soon changed to comfort and trust when his foster family came to pick him up. With final hugs and kisses from the shelter staff worker, Dallas was on his way to a new beginning.
Proving from the start to be a real Velcro Springer, Dallas prefers being with his foster parents than actually interacting with the resident dogs. He soon learned his way around by shadowing his foster dad and mom. Thoroughly housetrained, Dallas has free run of the house when his foster parents are at work or when they run errands. Upon their return, he is heard happily barking and if they don?t enter the house quickly enough for him, he starts howling sorrowfully! Trustworthy inside, Dallas does not counter-surf, trash dive or chew on inappropriate items.
Dallas gets along with all the resident dogs but has shown some attitude with the resident male a few times by grumbling, but this is being corrected by his foster parents. He does not beg for food, nor does he show any food aggression. When he sees the other dogs getting some treats, he will come and patiently wait his turn. Although he has shown no interest in toys, Dallas enjoys car rides and good old fashion belly rubs. He loves to explore while out in the yard or on walks and he pulls some on the leash as a result. This smart boy knows basic commands as sit, come, no, shake, and go potty.? With good house manners, he will only get on the furniture when invited.
A major cuddle-bug, Dallas places his paw on his foster mom or dad’s lap, looks at them in a sad manner as if to say, I want a hug. Then, he is in his glory when he is invited up for some cuddling! To gain attention, Dallas also will sit on his hind legs with both front paws in the air or will lean against one of his foster parents with his head bowed as if in prayer. Although Dallas prefers sleeping right next to his people in their bed, he will sleep on the floor. If his forever parents should awaken in the middle of the night, they should not be surprised to find Dallas cuddled next to them!
Some situations make Dallas anxious. When taken to the vet, Dallas walked right in to the office, but when it was time to meet the vet, he was fearful. So, for safety purposes he was muzzled. Also, when a fast approaching thunderstorm put his Yorkie foster sister into a barking tizzy, Dallas thought it best to run and find his foster mom for protection.
This sweet, active two year old is looking for an active, fun-loving family that has lots of running space, preferably in a fenced yard. A four legged, female playmate would be ok, but he would rather take all of the attention and more from his new family. Need a cuddle bug? Then, Dallas is the boy for you!
