When Dakota’s New Jersey owner went into long term care due to Alzheimer’s, Dakota came to MAESSR to find a good home. At his initial foster home, the male lab wanted to pick on him, so he moved to a new foster home where he quickly settled in just fine with the resident duo of a female Springer and a grumpy male terrier. Since he had lived in the same place since he was a pup, he whimpered about 15 minutes before settling down on his first night. Within three days, he was openly playing with stuffed toys and romping around the yard with the resident dogs.
Dakota knows the commands of sit and give paw. He will drop and roll for tummy pets, loves being brushed, and doesn’t seem to have an aggressive bone in his body. The only grr his foster folks have heard out of him occurred when he was playing tug of war with stuffed toys. He isn’t food aggressive, preferring to follow his humans around in the morning over eating his breakfast. He does respond well when told, Go eat your food. Completely housebroken, Dakota will do his business on or off leash, and seems trustworthy off-leash. He doesn’t bark unless someone knocks on the door and is decent on leash. He seems to like car rides, just hanging out in the back, either solo or in tandem with the other dogs.
This handsome boy is non-dainty at 65 pounds. Since he doesn’t jump up, get on furniture, or run into people, his foster family doesn’t really notice. He doesn’t love being crated and will whimper. Since he’s been trustworthy (just napping on a kitchen rug quietly all night and not chewing anything inappropriate), he’s left with free reign. Dakota is a good weight for his size and is pretty mellow indoors. He loves to go for long walks or just hang out with his people. It was reported that he loves to swim, which is likely the cause of the yeast infection he had in his ears when he first arrived in foster care.
Dakota’s foster dad thinks he’s just a champ, but knows that two dogs is the perfect number of residents to allow for continued fostering. This means that Mr. Koda gets to make a great addition to some other lucky family!
