Update 10/07/11:
Daisy Duke’s returned to MAESSR and is in foster care once again. One of the obstacles in Daisy’s new life with her adopting family was the resident cat, a tough senior feline who just didn’t want a canine whipper-snapper edging into her territory. Once in her new foster home, Daisy visited the vet for a checkup, weighed in at 24.4 pounds and was determined to be in excellent health.
Since returning to foster care, Daisy has done quite well. She has quickly returned to being an enthusiastic, happy, energy-packed four-and-a-half month old ESS puppy. She adores and shadows the resident five-year-old ESS. The two play and snuggle for hours. Daisy is excited to explore, everything within her indoor environment. She particularly enjoys getting into the bathtub and flipping the faucet on – oh, what can a pup think up!
Aside from playing hard, Daisy has been home-schooled, learning the principles of basic obedience and house training. Within several days she acclimated to going out for fun potty trips. At night she signals from her crate to go out. Since Daisy is so young, she still has a limit of about two to three hours in the crate without a potty break. As per obedience, within several days she has learned sit, look at me, down, sit/stay, come and target. She will take and give back articles. There is no resource guarding of food or objects and she works for praise as well as for treats. Daisy Duke has also learned to jump onto the sofa, as instructed by the resident Springer. Toss the soft toys and she will catch them all mid-air. Daisy is expert at countersurfing, particularly for goodies.
Outside, Daisy is extremely alert, observing everything in her environment. She is a nose-to-the ground dog, continuously working a zig-zag path to find the most interesting scents. Leash training is definitely a work-in-progress, as she pulls like a freight train. A small harness may be in Daisy’s future.
Each day brings new learning experiences to Daisy. Daisy is quick to learn and is Velcro to her handler. Above all, she has a wonderful temperament. Skittish at first when encountering new people, she now jets through her community as the flamboyant meet-and-greet girl. She’ll be a wonderful companion in a feline-free home soon!
Update 08/18/11:
Daisy Duke is getting freckles! Her foster mom worried that she had been out in the sun too much but they just keep popping up!
All the news on this precious pup is great! Daisy keeps her crate clean and is learning “outside and get busy.” She still has an occasional accident inside but, at her age, that is completely understandable.
Daisy loves to play with the tennis ball and is pretty good about bringing it back! She plays ball with the resident MAESSR boy and isn’t afraid to hang right on to the ball even if he is much bigger than her. She also plays ball toss with a 4 year-old granddaughter in her foster family. When Daisy is in her crate, the little girl will sit in front of it and read stories and sing to her. This calms Daisy down every time! She also helps walk Daisy who is beginning work on her leash skills.
Daisy loves movie night with her family. She got to watch Rio recently but like most young ones, she fell asleep on her foster mom and dad’s laps before the movie was over. This pup has a terrific start in life and will soon be ready for one very lucky family to call their own. Her adopting family will commit to furthering her training by taking Daisy to obedience classes within her first year. What fun she will be to have at one’s side for Puppy Class 101!!

A litter of Springer puppies usually means a celebration, but when finances are difficult, it can bring worry for a responsible owner. Daisy Duke and her littermates’ owner contacted MAESSR for help in getting these Springer pups off to a healthy, good start. So, in the dog days of summer, there is puppy breath in MAESSR-Land!
Using this Dog Days of Summer theme, each of the seven puppies from this litter received a fitting summer time name. When not on the beach in their bikinis, teens often wear short shorts as did Daisy Duke of The Dukes of Hazzard fame. MAESSR’s sweet Daisy Duke wins the hearts of all she meets.
Sweet and spunky, Daisy Duke is bold just like her namesake! When she arrived in foster care, she was at the crate door waiting to get out and explore. Even though she is smaller than her brother, Zephyr, she is the instigator and gives him the what for! Don’t be fooled though, this little mischief maker loves to snuggle and follow her people around. Quite the charmer, Daisy enchanted all at her first visit to the vet’s office.
Watch for more on this little gal!
