Original: “Her foster mom is working on reinforcing the technique of trading for another item. This is working well.”
Daisy lived with a wonderful family in Virginia that tried very hard to make their situation work. Daisy likes to guard items (especially socks) occasionally. With three small children, trying to keep socks put away at all times was almost impossible. The family made the difficult decision to find Daisy a home without small children. So, Daisy became a MAESSR girl.
Housetrained and crate trained, Daisy sleeps in her crate at night and goes into her open crate for naps. She dislikes human attention while sleeping; sleeping undisturbed is for her. She likes going for walks, playing tug-o-war, and fetch, but she has had no water experience. On walks she behaves very well on a leash as she has had basic obedience training. If she is distracted by a squirrel, she can pull, though.
Daisy knows and responds to the commands “sit,” “lie down,” “shake,” “high five,” and “walk.” She rides well in the car and is good both with grooming and with visiting the vet. When her people leave the house without her, she has no separation anxiety.
When new people come into the home, Daisy barks briefly, but quickly stops and is friendly. She’s actually good with children but should not live with young ones due to her guarding tendency. She allows food to be removed and will drop a toy for her people. Daisy loves all dogs but has never been around cats. Having another dog in her forever home would be a plus since a playful dog would help her burn off some energy.
This pretty Sproodle will sometimes “go into a hoarding mode” where she gets something– a sock, a pair of shorts, a precious bone– that SHE decides is high value and will growl/snarl if anyone tries to take it. She will release other, less valuable items using a trade-up or the “release” command. For instance, she plays fetch with a ball, no problem; frisbee, again no problem. And her resource guarding isn’t food related as she will allow her person to handle her food bowl. Her foster mom is working on reinforcing the technique of trading for another item. This is working well. She will need consistent training to get through this behavior. MAESSR will be requiring two series of obedience classes for this beautiful girl to help her understand that she does not get to make all of the decisions in her world.
Daisy is high energy and will need a family with the time and energy to keep up with her and help her be a “tired girl.” She was started on an inexpensive supplement to help with her anxiety. Her new family will be required to keep her on this for a minimum or six months after adoption.
Daisy will be a wonderful dog for a family without small children who will be dedicated to her training to make her the best dog she can be. She would enjoy a playful canine companion in the house, too, or family members who want to interact with their dog with walking or jogging or playing. If this sounds like your home, consider adopting Daisy!
