Original: Curley, aka Lover Boy, came into foster care because a shelter in southwestern Virginia was undergoing renovation and had no room for him. Thankfully, a vet tech volunteering at the facility took an interest in Curley, knowing that MAESSR might be able to help. Totally infested with ticks and with a slight limp, Curley’s plight became a priority and transport was arranged to a foster home. When his foster mom first saw him, he looked enormous due to mats hanging from his ears and a coat that hadn’t been cared for. Wouldn’t you know that, after some grooming, there was a handsome boy waiting under all of that hair?!? Cleaned up and much happier, Curley settled into his foster home along with a foster sister whom he adores.
During a visit to the vet with his foster mom, it was determined that Curley has 2 types of tick-borne disease, Lyme and ehrlichiosis, as well as an ear infection. He was immediately started on treatment for these problems. He enjoys the attention while his ears have medication squirted into them and takes his other medication readily. His hearing, which was just about gone, has begun to return, just as the vet suspected it might! And, amazingly, after just a few days, Curley’s limp has almost disappeared. He trots after his foster sister and smiles adoringly at his foster parents. His heartworm test showed a faint positive, but fortunately for him, the vet advised that the heartworm preventative will take care of that.
Curley is a great boy. He rolls on his back and talks quite a bit in order to get attention. He knows he’s too cute to resist. He is coming out of his shell, as he begins to play, eat good food, and gets a good deal of belly scratching which he craves. There is no counter surfer in this gentleman, nor does he disturb the trash can. Totally housebroken and reliable, Curly enjoys sleeping on his big comfy dog bed while his foster parents are gone during the day. He is very stiff at times from the Lyme disease and really benefits from not needing to be crated. He enjoys older children and the fact that they will scratch his back and ears. He is also beginning to show evidence of past training through his actions. He loves car rides and when not looking out the windows, he may fall asleep.
Currently Curley only enjoys the company of his foster sister, and the sight of any other dog brings on a session of growling and pacing which may disappear after he is neutered. He needs a lot of TLC, and to finish his antibiotics and ear meds, before he will be neutered. His foster mom is also working on making sure his weight increases and that he becomes the happy, healthy, boy he deserves to be. More on Curley as he readies for a new beginning.
