Update 07/13/10:
Many are very sad over the entire outcome with Copley. He showed much promise when he came from his relinquishing family. He spent considerable time with 2 of MAESSR’s most experienced foster families and met many other volunteers who work directly with foster dogs. Unfortunately, when his full personality was evaluated, the difficult decision was made that he was not suitable for adoption.
Original:
Copley is a very handsome boy who has been well cared for and well loved by the same family his entire life. Unfortunately, Copley guards food and toys. He was relinquished to MAESSR because his family has a baby and the parents were concerned that when their daughter begins to crawl, she may venture into Copley’s space and get hurt.
In doggy day care for three years, Copley gets along well with other dogs and is actually submissive with other canines. In his previous home, he played well with their five year old nephews in a supervised situation but can be overly energetic with small children. So, teens might be best in Copley’s forever home rather that younger children.
Copley is completely housetrained and although he was initially crate trained, he has not been crated lately since he is a good boy in the house. In his original home, Copley was allowed total freedom throughout the house with the exception of the bedroom. He is not a digger, chewer, or fence jumper but sometimes does urinate submissively when excited. Copley only barks when excited or when the dangerous vacuum cleaner emerges Although Copley doesn’t beg for food, he’ll sit very close to you hoping for something to drop. He does occasionally counter-surf and will jump on people in greeting. Copley has never met an adult stranger that he didn’t like!
A graduate of beginner obedience training, Copley knows the commands “sit,” “stay,” “come,” “down,” “roll over,” and “shake.” He walks well on the leash but it’s not known if he can be trusted off leash. Copley rides well in the car, too. Every few months, he is groomed without any issues.
Although Copley’s overall health is good, his blood tests from his vet checkup showed his thyroid levels to be low, so he is being given inexpensive thyroid medications to treat this condition.
Two of Copley’s favorite activities are swimming and playing fetch. When taken to the dog park, he will swim for hours fetching balls thrown into the water. Do you have a good arm for playing fetch with Copley? If so, this fun boy is looking for a family to love him.
