Update 11/27/2017: “He doesn’t resource guard his food so, if his person should happen to add a bit of left over Thanksgiving turkey to his bowl, no problem!”
It’s the holidays and Cole is loving the crisp weather and looking forward to good cheer with his foster family and hopefully with his forever family. He is visiting with little girls in the park who giggle to give him a treat that he takes gently from their little fingers. Frost in the morning puts a zip in his step as he trots out to see what the day will bring. After he asks to be invited up, he cuddles on the sofa with his foster mom while the fire sparkles in the fireplace…nothing could be better. Although he loves having his folks around as he snoozes, Cole is the perfect house dog, never getting into anything, even when no one is home.
Cole is one smart Springer who understands his commands and a great deal of “people talk.” He also understands the kitchen music that plays when the refrigerator door opens and that each cabinet hums its own special tune. He loves meal time and does a happy dance until he is given the “ok” at his food bowl.
He doesn’t resource guard his food so, if his person should happen to add a bit of left over Thanksgiving turkey to his bowl, no problem! He likes veggies and pumpkin too!
Now Cole is waiting for you to open your hearts and home to him. This sensational senior will bring happiness and blessings to your family this holiday season and beyond.
Update 10/18/2017: “And, then, he enjoys cuddling and many naps throughout the day with treats taken gently from his foster dad’s fingers.”
As October falls over the east coast, Cole has a routine that would endear him to any Springer-loving family. It starts with a lot of walks, long and short, all with great smells including all kinds of critters out and about and the leaves from the trees. And, then, he enjoys cuddling and many naps throughout the day with treats taken gently from his foster dad’s fingers. Rides out in the car are a favorite; his foster mom can go shopping now that the weather has cooled, and Cole will settle nicely in the back seat waiting for her return.
Cole would love to be with a family who is home most of the day. He’s not a loner and he misses his folks when nobody is with him. Last thing at night it’s settle-down time to share an apple and peanut butter (just a little!!) before he and his family all start to snore.
Update 09/19/2017: “An affectionate, active, and engaged field ESS, Cole loves his meals, his naps, walking and being outdoors, and being with his people.”
Cole was adopted but his new family reluctantly realized that they just had too much going on in their lives to give him a good home. So, King Cole’s foster mom and dad welcomed him back with hugs. As his foster mom sat writing about him to update his forever family, he sat patiently watching her and waiting for the next happening…or maybe just a snooze.
An affectionate, active, and engaged field ESS, Cole loves his meals, his naps, walking and being outdoors, and being with his people. On a recent day at 11:00 am, he already had his breakfast and a couple of walks. Did we mention he loves being outdoors?
Cole is an assertive male who needs to be the “big man on campus”… no competing Springers in his home, please. He has the best house manners: he asks to get on furniture, he waits by the door to go out, he waits for permission to eat, he doesn’t beg at meals or counter-surf, he knows his commands, he loves to go for a ride … and cuddling with his family is just the best!
Cole is a seasoned Springer with super house manners who loves his people. What more could a family ask for in a dog?
Update 06/11/2017: “An important point his foster mom would add to his story is that ‘old is BUNK when it comes to this guy. You should see him gallop toward his food bowl!’“
Cole is anxiously awaiting his new family. Health-wise he’s doing great. Treatment for minor issues is complete. His UTI has cleared and his ears are currently as clean as a spaniel’s ears can ever be. He’s ready to start a new chapter.
An important point his foster mom would add to his story is that “old is BUNK when it comes to this guy. You should see him gallop toward his food bowl!” As with many rescue dogs, Cole’s age when entering MAESSR’s program in 2008 was a good faith estimate made by his attending vet. That, plus 8 years with his original adopting family, adds up to a respectable “senior” age but one that seems a far older assessment than living with Cole would lead one to believe. At 11 he’s quite a young-at-heart gent.
Living with Cole points up that he’s a great guy and funny, but then, he’s a Springer. He’s the only bird dog his foster family has ever met that is leery of strange bird calls. Recently, he wouldn’t walk off the porch one morning to do his duty and kept looking in their direction. Lucky for him he has a savvy foster mom who took him out another door.
He also loves to go in the car. When his foster mom returns from getting the groceries, she has to put him in the house, or, he jumps in the back seat right on top of them…and is ready for the next trip to town!
Cole’s wisely appreciative of naps but he’s not proven himself as a couch potato in his foster home. The take-away on this dog is that, if you take him home, you should ready your sense of humor and willingness to actively engage his mind and energy. This care will keep him young-at-heart and perhaps you too!
Update 04/29/2017: “In addition to his walks and play time, Cole really LOVES his meal time, turning happy whirligigs in anticipation.”
Need a good buddy to walk and play with any time? How about a good listener that will sympathize with you, no matter what you’ve done? Handsome and affectionate King Cole is just the Springer for you! Like most seniors, this seldom-barking boy likes his naps and takes joint care medicine but he is also an inquisitive and energetic lad at heart. He has a bouncy trot, loves to take car rides, plays a fierce game of tug-o-war, and he can’t resist chasing a squirrel.
Cole is a MAESSR boy who lived many years in a household of four active people, whose home situation changed so much that they‘ve had to give him up. His experience as a long-standing family member shows, as Cole’s house manners are excellent. Although his big black nose still finds it hard to resist checking out the occasional trash can, counter-surfing is not one of his vices…good boy, Cole!
As with all long-eared breeds, the occasional ear malady might crop up and he is currently on medication for that and a mild UTI. He’s been a gentleman in his foster home about taking those meds, especially if it can be dropped in his food bowl.
Cole is one of those smart canines that not only follows orders like “sit,” “no,” and “off;” but understands a good deal of “people talk” when you tell him to “come here” and “far enough” when walking, although “leave it” might require a gentle tug on the leash or a sharper “NO.” Like many Springers, Cole prefers to walk ahead of his person but normally doesn’t push it more than going to the end of his flexi-leash. After all, it’s a dog’s duty to act as sentinel, especially if the threat of another dog looms ahead. In that case, it might be wise to rein him in closely.
In addition to his walks and play time, Cole really LOVES his meal time, turning happy whirligigs in anticipation. He loves it so much that he has a special bowl to make sure he doesn’t gulp it down all at once. Food guarding is not a problem and his foster mom can put her hand by his bowl when he eats.
Cole is crate trained but frets if he can’t follow his people around if they are home. He does not like to sleep in a room by himself and is much more content snoozing at night in his human’s room. He also considers it part of his duty to be the morning alarm by warbling (not howling) the dawn, although a quick trip to pee and a small biscuit pushes his snooze button for another hour.
Cole loves people of all kinds, even the vet, but doesn’t think that cats or other dogs should be allowed to share his family…no dog parks or doggie play dates for this boy. He would love to have his own fenced yard for playing and exploring. Cole can be a little boisterous in his play and on the way to the door or his food bowl, so he probably shouldn’t be around folks who have to use canes or walkers on a permanent basis, or really young children. When playing, he does not like to give up his toys and growls a lot during tug-o-war; but he isn’t guarding toys, he just wants to play. Cole’s ideal situation would be as the sole pet for a single person, a couple, or a family with children at least 10 to 12 years old.
All in all, Cole is a really sweet gentleman…unless you are a cat or another dog. The best way to bond with this boy is to give plenty of ear or back scratches and shoulder rubs. For these shows of affection he will literally melt at your feet and love you forever.
Original: “This Springer boy LOVES to play with toys and when playing gets him too warm, Cole likes to wade in the kiddie pool at his foster home for a quick cool down. “
Cole was found wandering as a stray in North Carolina with his friend, Caden. It was their lucky day. They were brought to the shelter and when their hold time was up, MAESSR was contacted.
Cole is a handsome young man that loves attention and wants to be with you. He is both housetrained and crate trained. Although he will check out the trash can, he does not counter-surf. This Springer boy LOVES to play with toys and when playing gets him too warm, Cole likes to wade in the kiddie pool at his foster home for a quick cool down. If you tire of playing and swimming, a car ride is nice and Cole will gladly join you for a spin. Cole knows several commands, so someone has worked with him in the past. He does pull a little on the leash, though.
Cole needed an immediate haircut when he got to his foster home. His coat was a mess. Cole let his foster mom shave him down, trim the hair between his pads of his feet, and even clean his ears. He was wonderful through the whole process. He knew he was getting attention and figured the haircut was worth it.
This boy is going to totally amaze some lucky family…is it you?
