Update 2/22/04: Colby is doing great in his foster home. He is housetrained and has demonstrated that he is trustworthy, crated or loose, in the house for up to eight hours. He is playing with toys and has become quite vocal at mealtimes. He hangs out with his foster brothers but doesn’t actually play with them.
Don’t let his short, squat frame fool you. Colby has springs for legs!!!!! He won’t jump the baby gates now but enjoys springing on top of his crate for a better view out the window. Colby prefers to sleep in his crate at night, and during the day, his foster family just leaves the door open. The vet removed the loose flap in his ear when Colby was neutered, so now he sports a rakish notch in his left ear. He is still a major lovebug who will go belly-up at the drop of a hat for a belly rub. He could be an easy addition to many an adoptive home.
Original: Colby was picked up as a stray in the Everett, PA area. He appears to be field bred, sports a scrawny, full tail and is on the short, stocky side. The shelter staff reported that he is sweet, loves people, ignores cats, and chases cars. After a couple of days in foster care, his new family agrees that Colby is very sweet and affectionate and loves people. He hasn’t had a chance to chase cars or meet cats, and he isn’t too interested in the house rabbit.
Colby has had a rough life at some point. He has a large tear in his left ear which has healed but has left an extra flap. His left front leg is slightly crooked, but it doesn’t seem to bother him. It’s been confirmed that Colby will chase cars, and it could be that he caught a few! When given the chance to ride in a car, Colby will jump right in and settles down for a drive.
Colby’s tail hasn’t stopped wagging since he arrived. He is getting along great with his 12 and 3-year-old foster brothers and the six-year-old son. He doesn’t seem to know what to do with toys and isn’t playing with the other dogs yet. So far, he doesn’t appear to be food or toy possessive. Colby is responding to his name selectively and was an angel at the groomer and the vet. He is vocal and will bark at any activity outside. He has a high pitched, muffled woo-woo/yodel combination which is quite funny to hear.
It seems Colby has been an inside dog before. He is working on housetraining, although it appears it will just be a case of reminding him of the rules. He wants to get on furniture, will counter surf, and loves his crate. He crated himself within an hour of his arrival for a nap and went right in and slept through his first night without a peep. He has also gone to the crate several times to nap during the day.
Colby is a Velcro dog, wanting to be with his people and to please them. He loves belly rubs and is quite content to hang out in the same room with his people, although he’d prefer to be in a lap. He is able to leap a regular baby-gate with ease and will do so with enticement, for example, to follow someone, although he understands that he shouldn’t. Colby has much love to give and needs someone to give him lots of belly-rubs. Could that someone be you?
