Updated 8/7/05: With just 2 weeks in his foster home, Cody is revealing himself as an affectionate, sensitive springer who loves attention and wants to please. He loves to play Frisbee and then sleep in the cool air conditioning, preferably close to someone’s feet. Cody is not hyper but does display normal springer curiosity. He wants to sniff and explore everything in the house and sometimes he thinks he ought to mark it too, but when he tries this, he is strongly discouraged from marking anything indoors! Cody’s desire to please and his sensitive nature make him a natural to learn what is required to keep house privileges.
Cody sleeps in his crate at night and is a perfect gentleman. Even when his foster family doesn’t let him out immediately, he never cries or complains. He just keeps watching with his expressive eyes that tell you he wants to be where you are. Not generally a chewer, Cody will pick up the occasional pencil and give it a nibble. He enjoys baths and sits quietly on the table during bathing.
Healthy and active, with a good appetite, Cody is also a connoisseur of dog treats. By patiently spitting out dog biscuits, he trained his foster mom to give him treats for the discriminating dog. Hot dogs, canned fish, and cooked veggie burgers are now part of his treat/training regime.
Even though he is sensitive, Cody also has some alpha characteristics. He quickly chastised the resident springer for sniffing him without showing the proper respect and he growled at the cats when he thought they were entering his domain. A quick reprimand on these occasions was all it took to put Mr. Cody back into the right pack ranking.
If you want a sweet, healthy springer who loves to wag his tail at every opportunity, Cody may be just the dog to make a part of your home and heart.
Original: Cody was in a shelter in western Virginia for six weeks with his brother Ace before coming into MAESSR’s care. The pair of dogs had been dropped there by their owner. Ace’s coat was so extremely matted that his foster mom had no alternative except to shave him. His entire hip and hind leg area was so matted that finding his tail was almost impossible. He probably had 8 pounds of mats on him before his clipping, yet amazingly, could still do the springer wiggle! Needless to say, he already feels much better!
Like his brother, Cody wants attention so desperately that he just becomes a wild, wiggle butt when someone loves on him. There will be more information on Cody coming in the next few weeks as his vet assessment comes together and his foster family gets to know him better.
