This Virginian came into MAESSR’s care due to the age and declining health of his owners. Cody is highly energetic, somewhat strong-willed at times, wants to be part of everything that is going on around him, and is a Velcro boy when it comes to his humans. His pace of daily life was outdistancing that of his family so they chose to relinquish him, knowing there would be a more active family that could adopt and love their boy.
Cody is extremely well-behaved indoors. He is completely house-trained and has full run of the house at all times, even when his family is not home. Typically he potty breaks every 4 to 5 hours but he is trustworthy for longer periods of time. Cody was crate-trained when first adopted by his owners but, with no reason to continue use, he’s not spent time in a crate on a continuing basis. He has been permitted to get on one piece of furniture, a bed in the guest room by one of his favorite windows. At night Cody sleeps on either a bed or a dog bed…. a content boy.
Car rides do present a challenge for Cody. He yelps and jumps around for five minutes into any ride due to sheer excitement. Tethering for safety or allowing a few extra minutes for slower starts is helpful. Cody loves to get groomed and has done very well in the hands of groomers. At home he does well with teeth, ears, and feet being handled for daily maintenance.
Leash-training is still a work in progress as Cody does pull. He loves to meet people out on walks. His reaction to other canines when out and about is dog-specific. There are dogs that he is enthusiastic to meet and greet and there are dogs that he immediately acts wary of. Reading his body language helps guide encounters. Cody views cats as toys to be chased. Cody has been given the opportunity to run in large, secluded fields and reportedly has very good recall. Like most springers, he loves to run and craves exercise.
Cody is good with adults and older children. He has a tendency to get over-excited when meeting new people or greeting house guests. If a stranger enters the house, he is at first cautious but, once he assesses that the visitor is ok, he can be quite an animated host.
In summary, Cody is a loving and highly enthusiastic Springer. Cody loves attention and adores petting and to be talked to. If you stop the petting, he will nudge your hand to continue. This boy needs the opportunity to connect with a furever family that will provide lots of love, training, guidance, and exercise. Cody is desperate to be a full-time companion and will thrive with an active and fully-engaging family.
