Updated 1/28/05: Cody continues to thrive in his foster home. He begs daily to go on walks. His foster family is still working to get the final regulation of insulin for him. Cody likes to carry around stuffed animals, lay at one’s feet, and watch his people adoringly.
His foster mom would like to explain to anyone who has not had a diabetic dog just how easy it is to give the twice daily insulin injections. She had never had a diabetic dog and really did not know what to expect. These are the simple steps she takes to give him an injection:
1. She gets the insulin out of the refrigerator and fills the syringe to 15 units.
2. She will have Cody sit and hands him several treats to munch on.
3. While he is distracted, she gently lifts a little of the skin around his neck area, inserts the needle, and pushes the plunger. Generally, he does not even have an idea of what happened.
4. She disposes the syringe, puts the insulin back in the frig, and gives Cody a hug, telling him what a great boy he is.
This critical but simple care for Cody is easier than what many dog owners go through to clean ears or clip nails. If you are looking for a really nice boy who will love you and remind you to go on daily walks, PLEASE ask the adoption coordinator about adopting Cody.
Original: According to his foster mom, Cody is almost the perfect dog. He has wonderful house manners, walks on the leash like a dream, does not jump on people, does not counter-surf or trash pick, does not get on the furniture without an invitation, waits to let his human companion go out the door first (what a gentleman!), and loves to be with his people.
Cody came to MAESSR because his previous elderly owner had to go into a nursing home. Soon after entering rescue, Cody was diagnosed with diabetes. Cody’s foster mom is still working with the vet to get his insulin dosage regulated. Cody does not mind the twice-daily shots of insulin. He likes them even better when they are followed with a treat and a hug. From what the foster home has experienced so far, it appears that the cost of the monthly maintenance of Cody’s diabetes should be around $25. Due to his diabetes, Cody will drink a little more water than other dogs and, therefore, will need to go “potty” a little more often. Cody has been left for up to 10 hours with no problem, but his adoptive family will need to keep in mind that he should not do this on a regular basis. At 62.5 pounds Cody’s weight is about perfect, he is fecal negative, and overall looks good.
Cody loves children and people of all ages. One of his favorite activities is giving kisses to children. Another favorite activity of Cody’s is going for a walk. He frequently gets the leash at his foster home, requesting that someone take him for a walk. Cody sleeps on a dog bed beside his foster parents’ bed. He ignores cats and loves to play with stuffed animals. What more could a family ask for!?!?!
Are you the “perfect” family for this “almost perfect” boy?
