Update 06/13/2016:“This little sweetheart is ready to see if there are any critters to chase in his forever home.”

Surgery for the skin tag on Coby’s eyelid was successful. He will have his stitches removed and is glad not to be wearing his e-collar anymore.  That got in the way of his running and chasing activities but probably prevented him from falling down a woodchuck hole he likes to check regularly.  This little sweetheart is ready to see if there are any critters to chase in his forever home.

Update 05/26/2016:“Another change for Coby has been living with the resident cat.  He has been very respectful of her and never tried to chase her!”

Coby moved to a different foster home where more time could be spent with him on housetraining issues.  With frequent potty trips outside throughout the day, much praise given for eliminating outdoors and vigilance of his whereabouts in the house, Coby has been accident-free indoors since coming to his new foster home!  

Initially, Coby was crated at night and when his foster parents were out, but now he has earned free run of the house 24/7.  Crates are left open in the kitchen and bedroom and Coby sometimes goes in for some quiet time.  He is fed in his crate also since the resident female Springer thinks she should eat everyone’s food!

Another change for Coby has been living with the resident cat.  He has been very respectful of her and never tried to chase her!  Such a good boy!  Coby has shown no mounting behavior with the two resident Springers as he had in his previous foster home.  

Coby and the resident male love to play chase in the yard, switching who is chasing whom.  When his foster mom is working in the garden, Coby and the residents stay close by.  They like the pack to stay together despite the yard being unfenced.  Rolling on his back on the lawn is a special delight for this pup!  He enjoys his walks and sits to have his leash attached.  Coby is very good at coming when he is called, too.  

The vet wanted Coby’s medicated baths to be weekly rather than twice a week.  His coat is growing in nicely with the exception of the area around his anus.  This has earned him the nickname “Monkey Butt” and he gets a daily washing in that area with an over-the-counter medicated, human shampoo.  The vet thinks he may have a yeast infection there.  

Coby is rather itchy on his tummy and the cause is unknown.  His foster mom is experimenting with feeding him a quality, grain-free kibble to see if that may stop his itchiness.  

At MAESSR’s Langhorne picnic, Coby’s lineage was clarified:  he is a Cavalier King Charles mix with either Springer or Cocker thrown in for good measure.  Whatever he is, cute and sweet are adjectives that go hand and hand with him!Coby is scheduled for vet work soon.  Once his dental cleaning is complete and he heals from having a skin tag and lip growth removed, Coby will be ready for his forever home.  He is a very sweet boy who loves people and clearly enjoys the company of other dogs.

This adorable boy was found wandering the streets in Pennsylvania and was taken to a shelter. Luckily for him, MAESSR was called and a volunteer “sprung” this mini-Springer. He’s now known as Coby.

A real cutie that is quiet yet energetic, Coby has had all of his vet work completed. His fur is coming in nicely, too. You see, he was infested with fleas when he arrived at the shelter and developed a flea allergy. This undoubtedly was uncomfortable and caused some hair loss. The shelter staff treated him and his hair is starting to return. Coby takes an over-the-counter allergy medicine twice a day to help reduce his scratching. He’s also receiving medicated baths every three days. Coby does very well with the baths, although he is not quite a water dog. Antibiotic eye drops are also part of his daily regimen at this time due to some redness in his right eye. The vet suspects this might be caused by a small skin tag on Coby’s upper lid that could be irritating the eye.

It’s estimated that Coby is about five or six years old. He weighs just 24 pounds, being somewhat Cocker Spaniel-sized, and could stand to put a few more on his tiny frame.

Coby is a very smart dog and already knew ”sit,” “stay” (although that needs some more work), “paw,” “down,” and “roll over.” He loves the belly rubs he gets when he’s asked to perform the “roll over!” Although Coby is not interested in any toys, he loves, loves, loves to get treats and bones. He eats twice a day and finishes his entire meal. There’s no counter-surfing from Coby since he’s so short of stature. This boy is great in the car and walks nicely on leash. He is allowed on certain furniture and will jump down from off-limits furniture when told.

Coby’s foster parents are working on his housetraining skills as he’s had a few accidents in the house. They give him high praise when he does his business outside as encouragement. Since Coby has no signal to go out, his foster parents are treating him like a puppy with frequent walks and yard breaks. Since he’s such a smart boy, it shouldn’t take long for him to figure it out.

Coby spent the first few nights sleeping quietly in his crate in the laundry room. He does not mind the crate but his foster dad thought it would be a better idea to have him join his parents, along with the resident dog, in the bedroom where he sleeps quietly on the floor. When his foster parents leave the house, Coby goes into his crate on command (with a little coaxing.).

During his first few days in his foster home, Coby was a bit too interested in the resident dog. He has since learned to give him some space, although he still likes to “dominate” from time to time. The resident dog is not much of a player even though Coby makes every effort to encourage play. Coby passed his doggie daycare temperament test and spent a whole day at the dog park! The staff said he mostly walked around with the other dogs. It is unclear how Coby would act toward cats. He has not met any children since he has been in foster care, but he gets very excited when he walks past the neighborhood kids playing in the driveways.  

Coby is a very affectionate boy who gives kisses sparingly but loves to snuggle!  He would do well in a household with other dogs and would probably enjoy the company of a playful canine friend.  Good things come in small packages…just ask Coby!
