Update 10/19/09: Once again, a complete turn-around in the life of a painfully needy Springer has come about through excellent veterinary care and selfless TLC from a foster family. Such is the latest on Clyde.
He has gained about 10 pounds and his energy level is way up. Most of his hair has grown back and he has a nice coat which now needs grooming! He runs in the yard and plays with the other dogs, but he needs to have a human buddy he can call his own. He just loves to follow his foster mom around or sit with her. He always checks to make sure she’s next to him on the sofa when he lays down for bed. He loves to eat and is a faithful companion in the kitchen.
It looks like Clyde is going to have continuing skin issues that require attentiveness. He recently went back to the vet for his seborrhea. He is doing a round of antibiotics and has a new shampoo. His foster family can keep him comfortable with a weekly bath. They’re not sure what sets him off, but his skin seemed a bit worse when it was hot and sticky outdoors. Other than that, he’s a pretty happy, healthy dog.
Just to clarify Clyde’s male dog aggression issues. He gets along with the 5 resident dogs in his foster home, even the dominant female. He doesn’t mind the girls, even when they get grumpy, and shares his bed with the dominant cocker, although since Clyde’s a heavy sleeper, he may not know she is even there. He does hate the dominant male with a passion and spends a good part of his day trying to get him to submit. The best Clyde’s gotten is being ignored by this resident which may irritate him even more. So, for the most part, things are just fine with Clyde and other dogs.
His foster family enjoys Clyde and, as always, finds their foster seniors are super easy!! He doesn’t have any bad habits; except he will get into the trash if given the opportunity. He is too old to counter surf but, then again, his family doesn’t give him the opportunity to try. The last thing Clyde needs to complete his story is a family who loves the pace, companionship and pure pleasure of life with a senior Springer. If that’s you, Clyde is your perfect match!!!!
Update 08/05/09: Clyde has made some giant steps toward better health since coming into foster care. He is doing better with each passing day. His dental went great; he only lost 9 teeth. A mass was removed on his back and the biopsy report was benign. Yahoo!!!! Where there was hair loss when he came to his foster home, it looks like it’s beginning to grow back slowly. He’s up to 45 pounds now and still has a great appetite. He will need to be monitored for Cushings which involves a periodic blood test, but he is otherwise healthy and happy!!
With improving health this special senior’s personality is shining. Clyde loves people of all ages and is good with other dogs and cats. With dogs, he does want to be the alpha dog so he should not be placed in a home with a dominant male. Clyde loves to go for walks and chewing on pig ears. He loves car rides and jumps into the car to ride quietly in the back.
Clyde is housetrained and actually needs encouragement to go within his fenced yard. If he’s being walked, he will do his business quickly. He has nice manners in the house. He has full run of his foster home. He doesn’t like being kept in one room if he’s not with people. His foster family has never crated him, nor have they needed to. He has gotten into the dry food bag once and is an expert table food beggar but doesn’t jump on tables or countertops. Good boy!!
Clyde is looking for a family who likes to share quiet time, family walks, a drive to the store, or park, and lots of love with their dog. He’s an incredibly easy boy who is looking for someone to take care of him and love him. He still needs frequent baths for his skin and regular ear cleanings, but mostly Clyde needs people. If you can match Clyde’s desire for love and companionship, please ask about meeting him. He will quickly have your heart when given the chance he deserves!
Original: Clyde was seized by animal control in an abuse/neglect situation in Pennsylvania. Shelter workers quickly called MAESSR for assistance with getting this 12-year-old some much needed medical attention and some good loving care.
After a good bath and grooming in his foster home, Clyde is already acting a bit happier, and he smells a lot better! His skin seems to be looking better although he has patches where he has hair loss. Consistently having good quality food is already paying off for Clyde as he has begun to gain weight. Only weighing in at 40 pounds, Clyde has a way to go though.
Watch for more on Clyde as he settles in with his foster family and starts his new life as a MAESSR dog. More information will be coming in as his vetting continues, too. Lots of Springer lovers are rooting for you, Clyde!
