Update 08/01/2014: “Then he went over to where Suzanne’s little sweater was laying, picked it up and went and laid with it.”
With peace, his foster family has sent Clell’s final update and thoughts of their brief blessing with him……………
“Clell was a very sweet boy and, even though he may not have felt 100% most of the time, he maintained his sweet demeanor. He loved having company especially in the form of other pets. When our Grandpuppies came to visit us, he absolutely loved having them. When they would play, he tried to join in!”
“He was a very beautiful boy. His white fur stayed a beautiful, clean white color despite his age and ailments. His hearing loss didn’t keep him from realizing when his foster brothers and sisters carried on. He would join in with perked ears and a big WOOOOF!”
“His real Mom told me a story about when her other Springer, Clell’s best friend, Suzanne passed. She said that she noticed Clell looking at the wall of photos she had. He was looking at a photo of Suzanne. Then he went over to where Suzanne’s little sweater was laying, picked it up and went and laid with it.”
“To everyone who knew Clell……..he brightened up where ever he visited.”
As this foster family was blessed, so was Clell. And, with his passing, his beloved Suzanne has surely welcomed him to the Bridge……………
Update 07/01/2014: “Clell is a very loving, sweet boy who deserves to spend his twilight years engaged in whatever makes him comfortable — and that’s exactly what he’ll get.”
Clell is adjusting very well to life at his foster home. His special needs are being met, but also have led to the decision that he should remain with MAESSR as a permanent foster. It seems that his lameness is worsened by the summer humidity; it also seems to affect his appetite. Several small meals each day seem to help
Because he cannot negotiate steps, Clell makes use of the ramp from his foster parents’ house to the yard. He has some difficulty getting out of his crate and needs help in doing so. Naps on the couch are a much better fit for him. He seems to be able to slide himself off of the couch quite efficiently!
Unfortunately Clell falls quite a bit but is able to pull himself back up most of the time. He doesn’t complain, though, and will gladly accept a little help from his foster parents whenever needed. When he spies a bird or rabbit in the yard, it’s hard to tell he has any lameness at all. He perks right up and would love to chase them!
Clell is a very loving, sweet boy who deserves to spend his twilight years engaged in whatever makes him comfortable – and, as a MAESSR boy, that’s exactly what he’ll get.
Wishing Clell lots of couch time this summer………….
Original: “Although age has slowed this handsome guy down, it has not stopped the love he is willing to give to the next family who is willing to open their heart to him.”
Clell came to MAESSR from a kennel in Pennsylvania where he had lived for about five weeks while his owner dealt with some health issues. When her health worsened, she decided that because she could no longer care for Clell, she would give him the next best thing, a new home through MAESSR.
This very sweet boy is showing typical age-related issues. As with any old Springer, Clell’s hearing and his sight are not as good as they once were, but his Springer nose is completely functioning! He also suffers from some lameness yet it doesn’t seem to slow him down. He loves to take walks around the yard and is a great leash-walker. Clell’s foster mom is working on hand signals to help him understand commands. He is a super smart boy and is learning quickly.
Crate trained, Clell sleeps in his crate which is kept in his foster mom’s bedroom. When his family is not home, he stays in the crate with no issues. If the crate is left open, he will climb in to nap during the day but he would prefer a nap on the couch! Clell gets along well with his foster dog siblings and would love to get to be friends with the cats of the house, if they would just allow him the chance. He welcomes anyone who visits his foster home and is always up for getting petted. Because of his age, he’s not too interested in toys but loved them when he was younger.
This beautiful old guy’s trip to the vet revealed more information about his health. He was a perfect gentleman on the car ride and was easily handled by the vet. Because Clell’s lameness comes from his back and not just his joints, the daily dose of arthritis supplements will not help heal all of his woes. It should, however, give him relief in his legs.
It was also found that he doesn’t have the best teeth, but what do you expect for 12? This does not stop him from eating with the foster dogs in the kitchen each evening; however, soft food may be in his future.
The vet also noticed that Clell has some sebaceous cysts that have burst but are healing beautifully. Additional information showed that at some point in Clell’s life, he had some kidney issues that caused him to lose one kidney; yet again, this has not stopped this old boy.
Clell’s foster mom believes he would do best in a family without young children because of his arthritis. Younger kids may easily bump him which could cause him to fall. He has impeccable manners, is a delight to walk, and would easily fit into any family. Although age has slowed this handsome guy down, it has not stopped the love he is willing to give to the next family who is willing to open their heart to him. Consider giving Clell a fresh start while living out the best years of his life.
