Update 11/07/11:
Short but good news for Clancy! His vet has weighed in to correct an earlier diagnosis. Clancy has a collapsing trachea and not a collapsed larynx. The vet continued that this is very common and that it should not cause a worry. Meds will be needed to make pushing air into his lungs a little easier, but that’s OK with Clancy. Also, this ailment is definitely what causes his little cough but that doesn’t seem to bother Clancy either! He may get tired a little faster but he’s got that figured out, too – more cuddle time with his people!!
The prognosis for Clancy is much better was earlier thought. His vet feels he will continue to have a nice life. Clancy is such a joy to have around his foster home and is really a great guy! Being the personable and adaptable dog that he is, Clancy is poised to easily wiggle his way into the hearts on an adopting family. Won’t you give this boy his forever home?
Update 11/01/11:
Clancy went into surgery to have two cracked teeth removed. He came through just fine but was really mad at his foster mom. Once home, he ran away from her for 3 days, only to establish himself as a master pouter! What a snipe!!!
His other health issues are clarifying and, though they will follow him through life, neither will compromise his enjoyment of everyday activities. His limp is caused by a mild degenerative hip problem. Keeping him at a healthy weight and on a high quality supplement for joint support will be needed so that he stays comfortable. His small but persistent cough has been diagnosed as a partially collapsed larynx…..poor thing :((. There is not much that can be done about the cough but medication can help push air through the larynx. Though a bit unusual, this condition is not life-threatening and his vet assures that Clancy will be fine – very good news!!!!
Clancy seems to take all of this in stride except when you actually take him to the vet. He really is a GREAT GUY! He’s losing weight and, now that he’s over his pout, he dances around the house as usual. His foster family loves the way he talks to them in the mornings and knows the person who gives Clancy his forever home will truly be a lucky duck!!!!
Update 10/17/11:
My! My! My! What fun Clancy is having with his foster family! He has really relaxed and has become one of the gang.
Clancy is now a playful boy. He has fallen in love with a stuffed toy that he hides from the other springer in the house. Also, an endearing habit has surfaced…..his foster mom has noticed that when she gets up to do her nightly house check, Clancy is sleeping in the bed with her 11-year-old son! Sometime during the night, Clancy goes up the stairs and ends up laying ON the little boy’s legs! His foster brother usually kicks out from this position, but Clancy doesn’t mind; he just settles in for a nice long sleep.
Per his vet’s recommendation that he lose 6-9 pounds, his foster mom has put Clancy on a diet and can see that he has slimmed down. She thinks he looks great right now, but allows that with a couple more pounds lost, he may be PERFECT!! In the mornings Clancy still dances around the kitchen for his breakfast!
Clancy has learned to “protect” the other foster dog in the house from the resident 17-pound Pekinese. Often, Clancy will give a resounding BARK at the pint-size pup whenever he thinks the other Springer is being harassed by said Pekinese! His foster mom thinks that this is funny, especially when the other Springer doesn’t seem to mind the little harmless Peke in the least……:)).
Clancy’s foster dad came home for a short visit from his deployment and got a kick out of Clancy’s grin, which seemed to have grown to a full SMILE!!!! His entire foster family just loves Clancy and knows he will bring a lot of joy to his adopting family. Keep watching for updates on the FABULOUS boy!
Original:
This sweet seven year old tri-color Springer came into MAESSR’s care when Virginia his family could no longer care for him due to health needs within the family.
Although Clancy was timid with his foster mom the first couple of days, he loved the children in his foster home right away. The youngest child is eleven, and Clancy is wonderful with her. His original owner said that he is good with children as young as five and his foster mom agrees, as she sees him as a very gentle boy. Clancy is good with other dogs, too, but he has not been observed around cats. Though he does not play much, he is happy to be in the same room with the kids and makes a cute submissive grin when he sees them!
Housetrained, Clancy goes to the door when he needs to urinate or defecate. He does not enjoy the crate and barks to be let out. He even throws his weight around when he is tired of being crated. For this reason, his foster mom does not put him in the crate and gives him free reign of the house. He has been a good boy with this freedom!
Clancy is very good in the car and enjoys looking out the window. Although he knows “sit,” “move,” “go lay down,” and “no,” he does not always listen. He is a very good leash walker and enjoys being outside. In nice weather, he would lie outside all day if given the opportunity. He does not offer to play with toys, but looks spunky when you take the “playful stance” with him.
On his first night in foster care, Clancy jumped up into his foster sister’s bed, but has not offered to do so since. He rarely goes upstairs, and when he does, it is only to check on everyone. Clancy loves the couch and tries to sleep there whenever his family is not paying attention. He was introduced to the dog bed and sleeps there most of the time. This boy is not inclined to bark at strangers and does not guard any object in the house. When the other foster Springer causes some drama, Clancy does perk up to see what is happening. A low energy boy, Clancy enjoys just lying around the living room with the family. He interacts well with all of the members of the family and would do well with a calm household.
While he is in foster care, Clancy is going to have two broken teeth removed. His vet is also going to continue investigating a small cough that has been with Clancy despite antibiotics. When tested, he had some internal parasites, so he is receiving medication to eliminate them. Since he has a limp on his right hind leg, the vet prescribed an anti-inflammatory for it which he is taking. This handsome guy weighs in at sixty pounds.
Clancy really is a very adaptable guy and his foster mother sees him doing well with any family who will show him the love that he deserves. He’s got a big heart with lots of love to share!
