Chrissy made her way to MAESSR from a Virginia breeding kennel along with her Springer Spaniel buddy, Coco 19. The dogs went to separate foster homes and Chrissy has adapted well to her new foster environment which also includes a few Springer Spaniels for companionship and play.
Chrissy had a big grooming session on the night of her arrival. Grooming is Chrissy’s favorite activity. She will insert herself between the brush and any other dog who is receiving attention. Chrissy is an exuberant participant in any doggie spa treatments. During her first bath, Chrissy plunked down in the warm soapy water and did not want to get out of the tub. While she was towel dried, her long thick hair would not completely air dry, so her foster mom carefully used the blow dryer. Chrissy relished the warm blow out and all of the pampering attention. Nail clips, paw pad hair clipping and ear washes are all enjoyable activities for this precious girl.
A couple days after her arrival, Chrissy went into heat. This has caused Chrissy to be a little anxious and she is panting a lot at times. Her initial vet visit went very well. She was a star patient! A few minor medical issues were noted and are under treatment (UTI, ear bacteria and worming.) Since she is in active heat, Chrissy will have to wait a while for her spay surgery. The resident neutered male Springer is happy to help her get through this situation.
Chrissy is a quiet sleeper and has preferred the new memory foam dog bed alongside the big bed. One recent night, curiosity got the better of her, and her foster mom was surprised by Chrissy on the bed with all the other dogs! She will stay off the sofas and large chairs, though. Chrissy has also discovered her bark and likes to use it to try to get things she wants– namely, extra treats. She does not like dry dog food although many types were offered. Chrissy was eating the high value wet food, but recently tired of this as well. She readily eats hard dry treats or bully stick and likes to chew on bones. Her foster mom feels that Chrissy’s heat has her extra confused with food options. Chrissy never tries to eat another dog’s food during mealtimes, but she will be very aggressive when treats are handed out. The vet suggested that Chrissy should try to lose some weight, so treats are not as available.
Chrissy really likes to be around other dogs; she NEEDS to be around other dogs. Her entire life was spent in a breeding kennel around other dogs. She readily follows the resident dogs around the yard and is always near another dog in the house. When the resident dogs go for a walk and she is left behind, Chrissy will bark very loudly for about five minutes. She will settle down and rest quietly while her foster mom is away from home. Chrissy has been left home with the other dogs for up to four or five hours. Any longer, and she will have a urination accident which is not unusual considering the UTI and heat status. Besides one or two accidents when her foster mom was away for a long time, Chrissy’s bathroom habits have been perfect since day one.
This sweetheart continues to be a joyful Golden Retriever every day. With the impending warmer weather, she will be exercised more frequently to help with her weight loss. Chrissy loves her walks and does not pull too much. She does wander from side to side, so one has to be alert to her sudden and forceful movements.
All who meet Chrissy are impressed with her content, easy-going demeanor. Overall, she is an extremely sweet girl. Stay tuned for more updates on Chrissy.
