Update 09/13/09: When Chrissy came to her foster parent’s house, she was a little sick with Lyme disease, needed to be spayed, and had a mammary tumor. She also had cherry eye and it wasn’t pretty. She was clearly a Springer in need and went very quickly to a veterinarian for help.
The vet took very good care of Chrissy, and, after surgery, her foster mom stayed home from work to care for her and to keep her still. Chrissy tried her best to be a good girl and, by the end of a week, she was back to walking with her big resident brothers. Her test results from the tumor removal came back clean. Yahoo!!!! She’s going to be OK!! With stitches out, she’s able to run around like a pup now. She still needs drops in one eye every day but is very good for her mom when the eye is cleaned, and the medicine goes in. A hug after this each day adds to the ease too.
Chrissy continues to be a great companion to the resident dogs in her foster home. She is especially good with one who has weak back legs. Chrissy gives him the space he needs to make wide turns and, if he falls, she waits patiently while he regroups.
Chrissy is another of MAESSR’s success stories. Her health is all better now, and she is ready for a furever home. She is typically right under her foster mom’s feet. A family of her own that will keep her healthy and love having her at their feet will answer her prayers. Can you help?
Original: Chrissy and housemates Sir Charles II and Precious III were given away by their original owners in 2007, and since then have lived happily in New Jersey with their second family. While Sir Charles spent many hours with the dad of the house perfecting his hunting skills, Chrissy and Precious played with the family’s 8 children and each raised a litter of puppies. When the family’s landlord said the dogs had to go, MAESSR was contacted for assistance.
The dog’s first day in MAESSR care was a busy one! Crated and good passengers, the Springers were transported about an hour before arriving at the groomer. Each dog was bathed, shaved, and then taken to the vet for health evaluations. For this entire 12-hour process, Chrissy and her buddies showed all involved how sweet Springers can be! Sir Charles would stand watching over the girls while they kissed him, and they all wiggled their little butts with pleasure for everyone who came near them.
Unfortunately, the lack of regular vet care has resulted in each of these dogs having health issues which must be addressed before they can be matched to their forever home. Chrissy is positive for Lyme disease, so she is undergoing treatment for that now. Then, she will be vaccinated and have mammary tumors removed.
When she first came to her foster home, Chrissy was a little frightened and shy, but still very loving. She has been a little Velcro dog never leaving her foster mom’s side and craving attention. Chrissy is a very good girl in the house; she doesn’t seem interested in trash, counter surfing, houseplants, and does not beg at the table. She did attempt to get on the couch, but this was to get close to her foster mom. Although housetrained, Chrissy initially appeared unsure of how to ask to go out. So, her foster family just took her out frequently and praised her when she completed her necessary business. When her foster parents are at work, Chrissy is crated. At night she sleeps on a blanket next to her foster parent’s bed.
This little girl is good on a leash and does not pull. Her foster parents are even teaching her to walk on the left and sit at the stop signs. She is a smart one who is willing to learn, and these lessons are progressing well. Since she knows so few commands, Chrissy and her forever family would both benefit from her taking some basic obedience lessons. When it comes to riding in the car, Chrissy needs no lessons, riding like a good passenger should.
Chrissy gets along just fine with the resident senior Springer. He perhaps will teach her how much fun dog toys can be; however, she does not show much interest in toys, currently. When it comes to cats, she is very curious about the strays she encounters on her walks, but she has not gotten close to them.
Watch for more on Chrissy as she becomes even more comfortable in her foster home and as she starts on the road to better health.
