Chip was surrendered because of his Virginia owner’s health issues. He was adopted at 5 years old when he retired as a service dog on a Search and Rescue team—three cheers for Chip!!! Unfortunately, Chip’s retirement was due to his developing idiopathic seizure disorder.
His disorder is managed with pills twice a day—in table scraps, peanut butter, wet dog food, lunch meat, cheese, or his favorite—cake!! But, Chip is a smart boy and will spit out his meds if not watched. He will have a seizure if he does not have those pills or is stressed. The seizure amounts to his lying down, drooling, and looking as if he has a Charlie horse in his legs. He does like his person to speak to him and pet his rear area during a seizure.
This handsome fellow is great with other dogs and is not aggressive—he’d like to be top dog in his foster home, but the house dog is matriarch. While in Dumfries he has gone swimming and been around children. He even chased a rabbit at the farm and found his way home. Chip is a house dog and enjoys his walks but is excited to come home and back into the house. He is allowed off lead, will stay around the house property and come when he is called. He will not go outside unless his person is with him. He is crate trained but has the full run of the house at his foster home. Chip loves to sit next to someone, playing fetch and chasing a ball. He will carry his favorite stuffed animal around the house.
Chip is housetrained but needs his people to pay attention when he comes to them and walks around—his signal. He has had some accidents when this was not noticed. He is a perfect boy with no bad habits of chewing or counter-surfing. He does not climb on furniture but will sleep at the bottom of his foster mom’s bed. Chip walks nicely on a leash and rides well in the car. He was good at the groomer but does not like to have his feet touched—cleaning his ears is o.k. He eats his food quickly and so does not guard his food. Nor does good boy Chip guard his toys.
MAESSR’s new guy enjoys being walked several times a day. He is not interested in meeting other dogs or people. Children run up to him and pet him, and, since he has not been around children before, this is new. He is not aggressive and lets those three years and older children pet him. Who knows what he will think of felines?
Chip needs a forever home either with a family or single person, but mostly, he needs an owner who can make sure he has his medicine twice a day. He is a Velcro boy and only wants to be with and please his person.
