Original: “Ki has attended a training class with one of the resident dogs and foster mom and became the demo dog!”
When a kennel in Maryland closed, MAESSR was able to step in to help find forever homes for the dogs, which included Chianti.
For Chianti (called Ki or Kiki by her foster family) everything has been a new experience. She can be a bit shy or reticent when she experiences something for the first time (like stairs), but quickly figures it out. She has attended a training class with one of the resident dogs and foster mom and became the demo dog! Although initially scared of the new setting and different class activities, in no time she was working with the instructor and was the star of the class. What a smart girl!
Please note that MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs 1 year old and younger to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption. Given Ki’s previous limited socialization as a kennel dog, these classes will be so very beneficial to her and her adoptive family. MAESSR will require Chianti to have two series of obedience classes to fast-track her socialization and training. They will add so much to the human-puppy bond.
Ki likes every dog and is very submissive with other dogs. She is always up for a play date and has a good sense of reading dog behavior. The older resident dog is not always happy with Ki’s adventures, but she will quickly read his subtle signs and change course. Ki loves human attention and human contact. She is a young dog full of energy and, like the puppy she is, enthralled with everything! Pretty much anything in her sight or that catches her attention can be viewed as a toy. She loves playing with the younger resident Springer and they explore the backyard as a team― grabbing branches and leaves, sniffing chipmunk trails and rolling around the grass together.
Housetraining is progressing nicely and in the house accidents are pretty much down to zero. Ki is crate trained. She is crated at night and when her foster mom is out of the house. She does not understand feeding order, so she is fed separately from the resident dogs as she has tended to run to their bowls. She will take a treat nicely and has learned the key times when the treats are given.
Chianti is a diamond in the rough that will need some guidance and training to help her understand and manage her puppy nature. She will thrive in a household that enjoys a lot of walks and exercise, training, and lots of time spent with her. She is a very endearing dog waiting for the right family to “help her shine.”
