What possibly could be cuter than a Springer puppy? Nine Springer puppies! It’s raining puppies in MAESSRland since a Maryland family’s purebred Springers got together and had an accidental litter. MAESSR quickly offered its assistance to the overwhelmed family in finding good, loving homes for the nine puppies. Since this windfall came in the fall, the pups were given names reflecting the beautiful colors of the season.
Chestnut is a sweet and typical mischievous Springer puppy. Quiet at first, he has quickly found his voice and his legs at his foster home. This ball of energy never misses an opportunity to run around the house and yard or to play with his tennis balls. He is a shadow to the resident springers, always observing and mimicking what they do while exploring every inch of his surroundings. He is also incredibly affectionate and especially loves to lie on his foster mom’s feet for a nap after a romp around the backyard. While he enjoys being around people, he is also quite adventurous and independent when outside.
With regard to commands, Chestnut is learning the basics. His foster mom is diligently working on sit and stay with him, and he is making progress. Although it is still very new to him, he is also getting accustomed to wearing a collar and being on a leash. MAESSR requires forever families who adopt a Springer who is younger than a year old to take their pup to obedience lessons, so Chestnut has some hours at the trainer ahead of him. He is a smart pup and will do well in class.
While Chestnut has still had some accidents in the house, his potty training is well under way and he improves daily. Most times he will run to the back door to let his foster mom know that he needs to go outside. When riding in the car, he has been in a crate and is an angel. He simply lies down and goes along for the ride. Chestnut is also crated when his foster mom is not at home, munching on a good dog biscuit that his foster mom has left for him there.
Chestnut does enjoy cornering the resident cats; however, it is simply to play and he will not hurt them. He will also raid the cat food if your back is turned, so if his adoptive home has cats, this will most likely need to be addressed. Although he is a little imp with the cats, he does not show any interest in chewing on furniture; however, socks and shoelaces are another story especially if you are trying to put them on. It turns into a small and amusing game of tug of war at times.
Chestnut is an absolute doll and with continued training and a loving home, he will thrive as a member of a lucky family.
