Original: “Chester will be a great dog for a seasoned dog home that will give the required structure and exercise for him to succeed.”
Chester was surrendered to a New Jersey shelter by his senior owner who found this youngster’s strong will, high energy, and excitability too much for him to handle.
Quickly assimilating into his foster home, Chester has had no problems with any of the four resident dogs. He seems to pick up on their signals and understands who are the ones he can play with and with whom he can not.
Housetrained, Chester has proven trustworthy for up to six hours. There’s no subtlety about Chester’s signal to go out. When he needs to take a potty break, he goes to the door and begins barking and jumping at it. At night and when his foster mom is out of the house, Chester sleeps in a gated tile room and has been great! Chester went into the crate at the groomers and was very well behaved.
When he first sees his foster mom in the morning or when she gets home after work, Chester zooms around the house. As soon as the door is opened for the dogs to go into the fenced back yard, he leaps over any of the resident dogs in his way, just sailing over the top of them! He does counter-surf but listens to a stern “off” and “no.” When he initially arrived in foster care, Chester did not get up on furniture until he was invited Chewing is not a problem and the only thing he has chomped on was a “found” paper towel.
Chester knows the commands “sit,” “down,” “off,” “paw,” and “come” but will choose to not listen to the latter when he is being asked to go to bed. He is very strong and pulls on his leash. When he meets other dogs on his walk, he is cautious initially but then wants to play. He loves to ride in the car and must have been taught to wait for a command to get out of the car. MAESSR will require his new owners to take him to two series of quality obedience classes to help them develop into the firm, gentle leaders he will need.
Recently, Chester has started to play with toys. He seems to really like one ball and the hard chew bones. He and the young resident male are play buddies. Chester play bows to his friend who reciprocates the bow. Then, they run around the yard together and tear back in house, stopping, bowing and then jumping toward each other and taking off again. It’s fun to watch their antics; they do play well together and seem to really enjoy the running. Chester has not tried to jump into the pool but his foster mom can see he really wants to try. He watches as his playmate sails into the air to catch a toy and swim back but Chester seems afraid to jump in too. Not object possessive at all, Chester does not guard his food or toys, but is fed in a separate area. He does try to take some toys away from the resident dogs but backs right away when they grumble at him. Chester is one high energy boy that must get his fair share of daily exercise!
Chester was great for the entire grooming process and also did very well at his first vet appointment. The groomer reported he did well with everything she did to him from ears to nails. The vet had no problems either from this happy boy.
Chester will be a great dog for a seasoned dog home that will give the required structure and exercise for him to succeed. He will need a STRONG, firm owner who can gently remind him who is in charge.
